Full metal jacket is a portrayal of both boot camp and wartime Vietnam. It's uncanny portrayal for accuracy must be credited to R. Lee Ermy, a former Marine Corps DI, a former staff NCO in the Marine Corps, and a veteran of Vietnam, who was initially hired as an advisor for this movie and wound up as being one of it's main characters, S/Sgt. Hartman the senior DI.
This truly is an outstanding movie for accuracy, including it's graphic language, and treatment of young recruits. It depicts the war well too, in that it reflects the reality, sadness, and loss suffered by both sides, in this unforgivable war. |
