My boyfriend is going to Afghanistan! Help!?

The "standard" for USMC is 7 months but it could be a year long deployment.

My husband is currently on a 7 month deployment to Afghanistan and the husband of one of my friends is currently on a year long deployment to Afghanistan.

The best thing is to let HIM tell you when he is coming home once he gets on the ground. The USMC deployments are normally shorter than ours (6-8 months) but they turn around and redeploy quicker. I was there for 8 months in 2003 with the 82nd Airborne, but we left to go fight in Iraq so it depends on the unit and their mission. NOTHING is standard on a flexible battlefield. I knewMarines who did a year in Bagram, but 7 months in Iraq. Their unit deployment times were what's important and can be based on what he does. Ask a senior Marine in the Fleet or a good USMC recruiter.

Bottom line let him tell you and see if you can join a rear detachment support group on his base in his unit to stay informed.

Tell him thank you for his service and you for your support. I served side by side with Marines this last tour in Iraq and even was wounded with two of them.

I am not really sure when he is gonna come back, but do not take it so hard on yourself, just put yourself together and pray for him while he is over there and everything will work out fine.

He will only be there for about 8 months. Only the army craps on their people, and deploys them for a year and extends them long enough to do 2 tours, hence the army's severe retention problems compared to the other services. The Marines would rather have 6 month deployments with in country training in the beginning and you training replacements at the end. The Marines are not generally there longer than 9 months at the most.

infantry 7 months at the least. recon i believe is 10 months at the very lease. one of my husbands deployments was over 12 months, (he is in the marines as well)

around 1 year possibly a bit longer. Don't worry, the military does everything possible to prevent their people from dying, and of course we've got one of best funded, most technologically advanced armies in the world.
