I am truly sorry to hear about your loss. The others have provided the correct links to the veteran archives. You may also wish to contact your local American Legion Post as well as the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.Either will more than likely wish to provide an Honor Guard for your father.
Hope this is of some help. |

Archives can find it for you. All you need is his social security number.
The Pentagon knows pretty much every hair on the head of every American soldier. |

The funeral director will know but they tried to rip us off, not telling us of all his benefits. Sorry, my world war 2 dad died years ago. Don't call a VA hospital, call A VA regional office and try to have your dads serial or social security number on hand. Ask to talk to a representative for surviving vet family's. They'll probably connect you to Am-Vets or some other Vet organization that performs funeral ceremonies. If he was a combat Vet, then he'll not only get a flag, he'll get a 21 gun salute at the burial too. You can order his discharge papers (dd214) from any Vet agency, anytime, and you'll want them just to want them. |

You should contact the Department of Defense and request a copy of his DD214 (his discharge record). Ask the people at the funeral home to help you. They have to do this all the time and I'm sure they have the appropriate contact numbers. |

Go to the flag store and buy one. VFW and American Legion soome times have certain rules. Go to the store and get a 3X5 flag and put it on the casket...Bring something to stick it on at the material is light and slippery... |

Contact the VA but I'm not sure how fast they will be. When my Pa died it seemed one just showed up, I bet one of my uncles took care of it... |

Sorry about your dad. Every town or municipality has a Veteran's Administration Representative. Call your local courthouse or use the yellow pages to get the telephone number or location of the VA local office. The VA representative will obtain your father's discharge records (DD-214) and he will also make sure your father's grave is marked with a veteran's medallion. |

Type Air Force Records Center
on a Yahoo search and click the first choice which is---archives.gov/veterans/...........
This will give you any location you might need for any record required.
For local assistance check with an American Legion or VFW post commander or call you congressman's office for assistance.
Last but not least you can check with any military cemetery for details. So sorry about your loss.
***Add -- I think all you will need is Form DD-214. This one page by fax should work. It includes his discharge status and is the legal form you might need for other benefits and family history. |

Your father was a very courageous man and we are all VERY proud of him for what he did for our country. Contact the Air Force they will help you out. |

You have a pretty sorry funeral director. It would take too long to get a copy of his DD-214 in time to bury him "with honors."
When my step-dad died, we merely told the director my dad had been in the USAF. That was good enough for him.
We later dropped off a copy of his DD-214 for their records because my dad was buried in a Veterans' cemetery. Three years later, my mom was buried alongside him. |

I had wondered this myself. Flags seem to show up, but from where? Based on your question, I called a local funeral home. They told me all you have to do is tell them that he was a veteran, they do the rest! They file the forms. So if you are having a funeral home involved, they will do the work.
Sending for this by yourself might not be as timely unless you do it the way they do. I am sure you would wont the flag in time for the funeral.
Healing be unto you. |

I'm sorry to hear of your loss.
You need proof more quickly than you'll most likely get it through the other suggested methods. Try this first.
Contact the County Recorder's office for all the counties where he's lived since he was discharged. (This will be the same office that records marriage certificates.) A lot of people back in those days had their DD-214s recorded there. (In fact, it was recommended they do so.) No one thought of identity theft back then. A copy they give you will be as good as the original. |

I am sorry for your loss, but nobody lives forever
Go out and buy your own flag. By the time "the government" gets around to helping your with your problem your kids will be my age (60).
Be sure to tell the pay people if your father was any type of government money. Mail them a copy of the death certificate. keep copies of everything they send you and you send them. Only deal with them once, than turn the whole thing over to your lawyer.
If you need copies of anything contact the Human resources Command in St. Louis. If they give you the run around, and they will, turn the whole thing over to your Congressperson... there are people in their offices who specialize in this sort of thing. |
