My father was a Para in WW2 can I obtain a replacement red beret as the original is not in good condition.?

I have my Dads awards, stripes and unit patch in a frame hanging on my wall along with a photo of him in uniform.
I am retired after 21 years service. Been retired for 13 years. My daughters and son all want me to leave them something from my service years. I was also a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne and the 501st Airborne Battalion of the 6th Infantry Division when it was active in Alaska.
You are doing a great service in remembering your Fathers sacrifice.
I guess you are British, and not trying to be picky, but it is a Maroon beret in the American Airborne, and I thought it was the same for the Brits.

Yes you can get replacements as my wifes grandfather had his replaced.

I think you will need his service number and then contact the Parachute association...should be on the net someplace

Hi, as an ex para myself I think you should bury your dad with his own beret, the paras were known as the maroon machine so the beret has that colour, having spoken to many ex paras we all want our own kit to go with us, all I have left is my beret so I know my boys dont want it so I prefer I take it with me.

You will of course be unable to get the same type of beret if it is the origional one that he was issued with. most army and navy stores or military surplus shops sell them. Sorry to hear about the death of your father , all respects to the memory of a brave man !

You most certainly can and if you Dad has gone then you can wear it yourself on Remembrance Sunday Parade - but do remember to let everyone know who you're wearing it for. You can also wear his medals, I think on the right breast with a white cloth beneath.

Yes, of course you can buy a Para beret (or any other military headgear) without having served in the same regiment yourself.

There are numerous Army & Navy shops, sometimes also called "Army Surplus Shops". Have a look around in your area or check the Yellow Pages.
Otherwise you can always buy online, from one of the many mail order military equipment suppliers.

I would suggest contacting the local branch of the Royal British Legion.

I had the same problem for my fathers funeral (ex RM Commando) and the RBL were brilliant.

I don't get the question, the fact that it is in a bad condition, makes it even more precious, you can't replace something for your grandfather wore..
