My hair is too short to tie into a neat sock bun. what should i do for bootcamp?

as long as it does not go below the collar of your uniform, (shirt, izod shirt for instance) then you can wear it down. If your Drill insists you pin it up, you just put as much in an elastic ban as you can and the rest you mouse back or pin in place or just let loose besides you arn't going to empress your drill anyways, unless you are one of THOSE females.
If you get it cut, nothing below the collar. or follow REGS:

"Female soldiers will ensure their hair is neatly groomed, that the length and bulk of the hair are not excessive, and that the hair does not present a ragged, unkempt, or extreme appearance."

"Styles that are lopsided or distinctly unbalanced are prohibited. Ponytails, pigtails, or braids that are not secured to the head (allowing hair to hang freely), widely spaced individual hanging locks, and other extreme styles that protrude from the head are prohibited."

"Females will ensure that hairstyles do not interfere with proper wear of military headgear, protective masks, or equipment at any time. When headgear is worn, the hair will not extend below the bottom edge of the front of the headgear or below the bottom edge of the collar." I don;t know how basic is now, maybe you will wear the BDU cap on the rnage and during field training, and the beret during duty and trianign hours, I assume.

I actually have very fine hair that refuses to stay in a bun or pinned. I did cut my hair short 3/4 inch from my scalp, best descission of my Army career. Much easier to clean and less time spent fussing with it. Remember you have limited time for showers and personal hygeine.

If you're going into the Navy since you said boot camp, they'll cut it at basic in a short bob that will have your hair above your collar. It'll look something like this. picture on page 2.

You could get a better cut like it before you go to bootcamp. I guess they allow shorter cuts too.

Since females cannot have their hair down at BCT, you will more than likely have to cut it even shorter...kinda like a guy's haircut (non-military).

if ur a guy haha you wont have hair for long there trust me lol if your a girl seriously just shave it all of youll look like a dyke for a little while but you wont have to worrie about it getting in your face and it will grow back out after bootcamp and you can keep it any style you want

Well I can't speak for all branches but I assume they are all mostly the same. Female hair has to be above the top of your collar. Hair pins and elastics have to be the same color as your hair. It is not mandatory for hair to be in a bun, but it must look neat, have no hair in your face (to include bang) and must not impede in what your doing (shooting, PT, etc.) your best bet, if you can not pull it into a ponytail that does not fall past your coller, get it cut into either a bob that sits right at your chin (that's what I did) or go a little shorter, just don't get it done too piecy or chunky. well i would just put it in a short little pony tail, and then use a thin headband to catch the whispy hair...because i have short hair and i still need to use a headband to workout...i don't know the rules of the military as far as what is appropriate for women and their hair, but you may have to cut it shorter.
