My son wet the bed until he was 16. What should he say on the form where they ask if he wet past 12?

My son graduates high school this spring. He doesn't turn 18 until July, but they said they'll let him join as soon as he finishes high school if I sign off on it, so I will. He really wants to serve his country. I know there's a question about if he wet his bed past the age of 12. Well, he wet almost every night until last year. He's stopped pretty much completely. Should we answer the question honestly or will that hurt him in the future? Please let me know.

Randy has the correct answer. Have him checked out. Wetting the bed that late in his life, he could have a bladder condition.
mikea109 has it somewhat correct, it might be a psychological condition however the military is not going to expend any money on your son to find out why he wets the bed just so he can join.
It is a Disqualifying issue not up for discussion.
It wouldn't be pleasant for him if it happened to him while he was in Basic Training. It would be a life changing experience and something he should not have to deal with. If his bed wetting is something psychological, think of the psychological effect it's going to have on him when everyone in his barracks knows that he wet the bed? That's something that cannot be hidden. Tell the truth.
They do not have plastic sheets on the beds and soldiers are not allowed to use adult diapers. |

I just want to understand this correctly--i'm not trying to make you feel bad or anything.
Your son we the bed until the age of 16.
Did you have that checked out? Because that could be a serious problem. (My sister is in the same boat as your son, she's coming up on 15 in May.)
I think you should be honest, myself. Because they will see that, and in all probability do some tests during his physical and rule out things that would disqualify him.
But if you lie, and he happens to have an accident.. |

If they find out the parent is still babying him at this point in his life, it won't matter. |

Bed wetting is a psychological issue, and this will complicate issues for your son. They will probably put him through additional testing to bring out the deep seated issues that complicate matters. or, they could turn him down all together.
I believe most youngsters grow out of this phase of adolescents, especially when they are thrown into a discipline that follows them through military life. Or, the bed wetting could re-occur in basic training when the stress levels are the greatest.
If he's really intent on signing up, the ball is in your court on how to advise him. I would let the cards fall as they may, it's time to be all that you can be. If he has what it takes he will overcome this without the world having to know. Besides, it looks like he may have already beat it. |

You should teach your son to lie to get whatever he wants no matter who it hurts. |

This should be a given, tell the truth. |

The truth is always best for the Military, if they find out he lied then it can go badly for him.
"He's stopped pretty much completely"? So he still wets the bed on occasion, It's hard to hide something like that in a barracks |

Well i like the truth but sometimes we are forced to hide the truth because the truth is used against us. What i have heard in this case is that the army... will consider a child who wets the bed up 2 age 12 normal but past that they will consider that the fact that there wetting the bed that late in age is because there coul possibly be a emotional problem with the child. If the suspect or can confirm that than the chances of going in2 the army.. are slim to none. I personally know some1 who went through it. u may want to ndouble check on this info & the pros & cons of saying the truth GOOD LUCK!!! |

I'm guessing this is for MEPS, in my opinion you should lie about it because they might make you leave and come back another day when you have "medical documentation" stating that he is ok to go. It's your choice, however. |

When you say that he stopped pretty much completely, does that mean that he still does it every once and a while? If so I think you might want to wait until you know that he has completely stopped wetting the bed before sending him off. Because if he does it even one night during basic training or AIT, it will raise a lot of red flags to the drill instructors and if you checked no on the forms at MEPS then he could be charged with fraudulent enlistmet.
There is also the fact that even if you get a waiver... having that happen even once during Basic or AIT, he will not be able to gain the respect of his peers and will more than likely have a terrible time during his military career because he will always be known as the recruit that wet the bed. That is just my personal opinion. |

I think he should lie, but that's just me. |

Lie.,
If he no longer wets the bed at this time it's a non-issue.
Just like if someone has smoked pot or done any other recreational drugs in the past but hasn't in years., why would they possibly want to come forward with that information? Just fill in the bubble next to 'no' and sign on the dotted line. It may not be the honest way but it happens more than you think. |

My son did. He had a weak bladder. When he joined the Army, the question didn't come up. With all the exercising they do, it has helped strengthen his bladder. It really made him somuch better that we stopped worrying about it and don't think about it now. |
