Please be honest and please don't leave any negative comments. I have a younger brother who dreams to serve in the U.S Army. The problem is that he has a few misdemeanors. 1 simple battery, 1 criminal tresspassing and a few traffic violations for speeding. To my knowledge he is not allowed to get a waiver for 5+ misdemeanors, but I want an opinion from an expert. Possibly a recruiter or someone with military experience to answer this question. The recruiter wants to see him tommorow so please give me some advice or tell me if he will be able to get a waiver. will the traffic violation hold him back from service?

Traffic violations have no bearing on enlistment. When I was a recruiter, 5 misdemeanors is one too many. 4 is the maximum you could have. If your brother has some charges that were dismissed, then that would help out his case. If he did have a charge that was dismissed he still needs to tell the recruiter. Lying will screw him in the future. If the recruiter tells him to lie, then he needs to find a new recruiter quickly. |

Army and Marines he'll be okay to join with a waiver which they will get him. The truth is the military needs guys/gals right now.
He won't be allowed for the Air Force.

I enlisted back in 2004 with a misdemeanor and a few traffic violations on my record. The Air Force required a waiver to get in at all with a misdemeanor, but the Army let me join without one. The only stipulation was that I couldn't qualify for a top secret clearance on my first enlistment term (I did get a secret clearance which was needed for my MOS in comms).
I'm not positive, but it may depend on what he wants to do in the Army. They'll let just about anyone in to do basic infantry and arty jobs. The recruiters have a quota they have to meet per month so they'll usually overlook a few things and tell you to lie at the MEPS station (where you go to get your physical, swear in, etc.).
At least half of the people I talked to in the Army (about this) told me they had lied about something at MEPS when they joined :P |
