So this might be a stupid question to ask a bunch of strangers but I want to hear honest opinions.
My husband is Active Duty and I'm National Guard. I've been wanting to switch to Active Duty since the day I got to Basic training, I fell in love with the way life is with th military. I love the order of things, the schedules, always something to do and something new. I hate working in the civilian world. I'm a medic and about to go to school for my flight medic, get my E-5 (FINALLY). If I switch to Active Duty I was told I wouldn't be able to stay as E-5 and most likely won't be able to be a flight medic, because I'm a female I'm needed in the clinic....I hate being couped up in the clinic. I've work ADOS (active guard) and am going to take all the proper classes (WLC and etc) to uphold everything. What are the possibilities of all that actually happening?
On top of that question I have another.
I know LOTS of dual active duty couples that are stationed together but everyone I've talked to, to help me switch over, keeps telling me that since the Army is so "over-strength" I WILL NOT be stationed with husband even though we have a child. I know about the whole "50 mile rule" but hear that it seldomly happens because, let's face it, how many army bases sit that close to each other?? Should I just give up on the whole Active Duty thing? To tell you the truth I hate the National Guard and I hate how I'm treated because of the fact that I'm National Guard and not Active Duty....

To answer your first question, going active duty from the National Guard takes a bit more paperwork than to go active from the Army Reserves, but it can still be done. It simply requires having a contract in place and then going to your 1SG to get the ball rolling.
To answer the rest of your questions... I am not sure who you are getting your information from, but I can guarantee that you are not talking to a recruiter. While it is true that you may not (not a guarantee either way) get to keep your E5, that is only a temporary thing. You will make that rank back in less than a year. Sorry, but that is just the nature of the beast.
The other issues, being stationed at the same base, not being a flight medic are all issues you need to talk to a Active Duty Recruiter about. Don't listen to well meaning, but uninformed people. Even though they wear the same uniform as you, if they do not work in recruiting they don't know what can and cannot be done.
Just a thought, consider going for the Warrant Officer program (not sure if Flight Medic is one of the areas, but I am sure there is a Medical branch that would allow you to continue your chosen profession, at a rank that commands the respect for what you do.) |
