I have been in the Guard for a year and have become unhappy with the weekend warrior deal. All of you who are in the "why didn't you go active in the first place?" camp, don't even respond. The guard seemed to be the best thing for my wife and I but that has not turned out to be the case. I am currently an E-2 13P. If my commander signs the DD368 and releases me, can I reclass? If so, would I go through the normal AIT or a fast-track kind of course? Side note: I'm thinking 31B or something in Intel. And yes, I scored well enough on my ASVAB to qualify.

Don't worry about anyone second guessing your choice to start out part time. Better you start out part time then decide to go full (like you are) than go full and hate it and not be able to go part time.
You need to talk to your Army recruiter about reclassing, because a lot of prior service guys on here have been saying if you can switch over/get in you either have to stay in your MOS or reclass to 11X, 18X or a few other choices.
If your commander won't sign your 368 immediately, you can always request a mobilization through your unit, or get on GKO and volunteer for a deployment on there. If your command has a pending mobilization, they will not release you.
If you do reclass (through full AIT) and you are still an E-2, they're probably going to treat you like all the other privates since you're still a private. How tough or easy that is will depend on the MOS. |

It would be far easier to go active if your were in the reserves. If your in the Guard you know all about title 10 and title 32 so no need to go further. If your unit gives you a conditional release then yes you should be able to reclass, but keep in mind any bonus you got from the Guard will have to be paid back and yes you would have to go through the normal AIT portion with brand new PVT's. The difference is that since your reclassing you should be treated better no stupid phases like you had in AIT the first time around. |

Well this isnt really an answer but I too have the same dilemma. Difference is , I havent enlisted yet BUT i'll soon be. I go to MEPS in a week for the NG and was wondering once im done with BCT will i be able to go active as soon as im finished. 31B is my choice for a MOS also. Ft.Leanord , here I come. |
