Navy SEALs, former felony which has been reduced, recruit is saying "no go"?
|
I am 27yrs old now, I have been wanting to be a navy SEAL for over 9yrs. When I was 19 I went to mexico, got involved in drugs. When i got off them i ballooned up to 380lbs. I tried for years to get it off, couldn't get it off. So I "physically" i gave up, but never mentally. Meaning I still had that dream that desire, but i wasn't doing anything about it. I eventually put it in the back of my mind, it was a "lost dream" I went back to mexico a few months ago, started dropping weight, and i knew i could do it. Yeah I had difficult roads, many many rough times to accomplish what i want to, be a SEAL.
When i was 20 or so I went to th recruiter talked to him, he told me "just get your Adult school diploma, and drop the weight and you can be in the navy. I also stutter, and i asked him about it, he said "don't worry about it, i know people in the navy who can't even talk." So i went to school and got my Adult school diploma, still had difficulty with my weight, that was the second thing. Like i said i tried for years to get it off to no avail. Well now it's pretty much off, still have a little more to lose but not much. I dropped over 90lbs. I went back to the recruiter last night, to see what i need to do, he told me "well you can't be in the navy cause you stutter, I can tell you that right now, (i kind of had a feeling of that, it didn't phase me). Next thing he tells me, you have to get down to 205lbs. I am at 18% bodyfat, at 290lbs. The "average" male is at 15%. If I get down to 285 or so, i'd be at the "average male percentage of bodyfat" I told him, "it's physically impossible for me to get down to that" he said "well, we have our standards" i said "what if i pass the "PST (physical screening test)" he really didn't say anything. he said to me "well you can't just go in and go to bud/s(navy SEAL training) you have to be in the navy for a while, and they put you where they want to. I know about the SEAL contract, they send you to bud/s right after bootcamp. I asked about it, he didn't say much. At the end I asked him, "what do i need to do to get in to bud/s" and he just said.. "continue dropping the weight, and stop stuttering" That sounded good to me. Then he was just saying, "we don't accept people with high school diplomas, or people who have problems with the law" I told him i had issues with the cops, he asked about it, I told him when i was like 18 or so, i got a felony for selling steroids on campus. Before the judge sentenced me, he said "I would let you go, but because this happened on campus, i can't let you go" truth of the matter is, there is no evidence that i did sell them on campus, i don't know why they where assuming i did. The judge gave me no room to speak, and what he said was final. It was reduced to a misdomineer a few years later.
Some option i am aware of is.
1. I was talking to my friend in a chat about what is going on and i got an instant message from this person. They told me, "over here in riverside california, i go to lunch with this naval recruiter everyday, he's always bypassing police charges. over here in riverside they're dying for recruits, they'd bend over backwards to get someone in."
2. I told another friend about what happened, he said "you can get those charges expunged, or sealed. I look in to it, and if i do that, i won't have that stuff on record anymore. I do recall reading that "police will still have info to your crime if it's expunged" But I think it might be possible to get it Sealed.
3. Just get a damn lawyer, one guy tells me one thing, another guy tells me another, and the lawyer will help with the sentencing i got, not a chance to say the truth.
Sorry for the long post, but i hope some people can see why this is so important to me. after 9yrs of bs, and finally the door is open, but the gatekeeper won't let me in...

Well their is now a field (The SO rate) that allows you to straight into SEAL/BUD, but it has very tight requirements, as mentioned the cream get offered that.
But the Navy has a standard of no felony CHARGES. For the USN it does not matter about conviction or what if you have been charged with a felony, and was dropped, you have to get Gods permission to get in the Navy, and I can gaurentee you would not get the appropriate security clearance with a drug Felony. Also, with the way things are nowadays, the Navy can be more selective meaning they can require a HS diploma (not an equivilant). At times the Navy has taken GED and Equivancy Diplomas, but you have to jump through allot of hoops, and than get Gods permission. The weight thing, BFC is not all that is used, and entry level BFC is more strict than the Fleet Standard. Also their is no such thing as an expunged or sealed record for military service background checks! That seal disapears, and that expunged record is re-found (regardless it is the charge that matters to the Navy as well, which will never go away)
In short, poor economy = more potential recruiters = Navy more selective = You don't just need to meet the standards, but exceed them. |

OK, I know you mentioned you getting the contract to go strait to BUD/s post boot camp. Do you realize the guys they are doing that for are the ones they recruited for certain reasons. IE: Cream of the crop guys in college/hs that play water polo, soccer, swimmers who have shown their entire life they were a team player and dedicated to sports/physical activity since youth, they are also highly intelligent. They RARELY take just any Joe blow into a strait to BUD/s contract. The Majority of SEALS were in the Navy for years in their original MOS before they make it to BUD/s. With your qualifications and records, I highly doubt they will take you at all into BUD/s....most guys your age accepted have been in the Navy for years and have an extensive amount of experience and fantastic military records, that go into BUD/s.
I am not trying to be mean, but with your record, health and lack of experiance.....you will never get the strait to BUD/s contract. I don't even think you will qualify for BUD/s if you do enlist. If you recruiters are not even addressing you with this idea, then you are not a candidate. They are not going to push someone through that is a joke of a candidate. The money it cost to recruit and train is expensive......no matter the MOS. The military is not here to cater to you, you are here for it.
Enlist (if you can) if want and go from there. I highly doubt you can even enlist with that felony. Sorry. |

-You can be in the Navy with a stutter, my last boss had a horrible stutter
-There is no SEAL contract, SEALs are taken from other job fields in the Navy. He was correct, you would have to join the Navy in one of our job fields, then you would apply for BUDS/SEAL training. This is only if your current command will allow you.
-What you're hearing about Riverside is BS. Look at the economy as well as unemployment. There is no need for a recruiter to bend over backwards. Also, if a recruiter were to be discovered "bypassing police charges" they would face charges as well as jail time for forging government documents, would you do that for someone you hardly know?
- If there is no felony on your record there is no need to expunge your record. However if there is a felony, that would be a dealbreaker.
Sorry if this is not what you want to hear, but it is the truth.

you aiming too high for a career goal in the military right now , you just need to see if any of the military branches would accept you, which i doubt it..but you can try.. ,but IF you get into the a military branch and finish your first contract and reenlist you may have a chance there . |

Ok, first of all to say that you are 290 pounds and only 18% body fat, I have to say wow. You are a behemoth. You must be huge with muscles or extremely tall. If it is muscles, then your recruiter would have explained the waiver process. Also, with the criminal charges, a waiver might be one route, a letter from the sentencing judge and people who have been in direct responsibility of you since and can attest to your attitude towards law and character references would be needed and then it would either be accepted or rejected. The stutter problem, I don't know of any rule against people that stutter being allowed in any armed forces. I can say that I have known people with a stutter that have served in the military. I don't think they were in charge of communications but I dont think it hinders your ability to serve or shoot. Special forces might be a whole new ball game but hey, if GI Jane could do it, then a fat stuttering ex-con should have a shot. J/J
Geez, you make a few jokes and everyone wants to thumb you to death! |
