Navy Vs Marines in regards to NCIS?
|
Hi,
I am a fan of the tv show NCIS. I realise this is fictional and glamourises the jobs of real special agents, etc etc, but since watching it, I have developed a real interest in the Navy and Marine Corps. I recently researched the differences between the Navy and the Marines, but I am still a little confused on one point. NCIS is the *Naval* Criminal Investigative Service. Meaning they investigate the Navy. Yet they are always investigating cases that are primarily about Marines, and from what I've seen, the Navy is only really mentioned when they have to board a ship. It may sound stupid, but I really don't know much about the Navy or the USMC and I am Australian so it is a little harder to understand too. Why wouldn't they investigate more Naval cases instead of just Marines? When they have a jurisdiction conflict with the FBI, they always say "He's a marine, therefore it's our jurisdiction"...nothing about the Navy.
Can someone please explain? (My apologies if this is a stupid question but I don't understand, and would really like to).
Thanks. Additional Details Thanks for all your replies so far. I'm aware that the Marines are a branch of the Navy, but was just puzzled as to why there wasn't more focus on the Navy, in the show, it being the "NAVY" CIS - instead it is all about Marines, with little mention of the Navy at all. Maybe that's just the writers of the show though :-) I have heard of "The Real NCIS" doco show - I would be very interested in it, but I don't have cable unfortunately :-)

Marines are part of the Department of the Navy, there is no department of the Marine Corps. That why the Navy has jurisdiction. |

The Marine Corps is part of the Department of the Navy and as such falls under the same jurisdiction. One thing that interested me was that the NCIS is a civilian organization. Our other branches of service have CIS as part of the service. The Navy Chose to do it differently. |

The U.S. Marine Corps is part of the U.S. Navy (although there is a good deal of traditional competitiveness and even animosity between the two). This relationship dates back to the birth of the U.S. Navy in the 18th Century...the Marines were the riflemen and foot-soldiers carried aboard naval vessels. They would engage in ship-to-ship fighting and could be "delivered" as ground forces by ship.
If you're interested in the real NCIS, there is a pretty good documentary program called "The Real NCIS" produced, I think, by the Discovery Networks....none of them look like Mark Harmon or Cote de Pablo though... |

One reason they focus more on Marines than Sailors is simply a matter of economics and access. Shooting a show about a Marine means they don't have to get onto a pier, or onto a ship. Much easier. While NCIS is welcomed and popular with both Navy and Marines, getting permission to film on a Naval Base, pier, or ship is not automatic.
And they do have shows featuring sailors, but the majority of them are USMC. |

There are 3 MIilitary Department the Navy, Air Force, and Army. The Marines fall under the Department of the Navy so they use alot of Navy resources such as NCIS, Navy JAG who has both Marine and Navy personnel as well as Navy Hospital Corpsman who go out in the Field with Marine Units seeing as the Marines have no Medics. |
