Navy and divorce rate....why so high?

I've heard that the Navy has the highest divorce rates. Why that branch and not another? What factors contribute to so many divorces in the Navy?

*I'm a Navy wife. Just curious.

The first reason that comes to mind is immaturity. High school sweethearts get married to be together while he's in the service. But boot camp separates them almost immediately. Then there's advanced training. There are the deployments. Some of them get married to get away from their parents only to find out the dumb parents never prepared them to live on their own. Then there are kids to care for. Neither of them are adult enough to cope with all that.

I think another reason is finance. Young kids who might not even be out of their teens, who are spoiled by parents, find themselves on an extremely limited budget. Trips to the mall are over. Cruising is out too -- especially with gas prices what they are.$50 for a pair if jeans is out. Even frequent trips to fast-food places. I think that's a stress to relationships.

Another reason is the deployments. The other services have ground bases. The Navy has ships. About half the time he's not around -- even during peace time. Granted, if the ship is in port, married crew can go home at night if they don't have any watches to stand. But ships are at sea most of the time. So, while the Army and Air Force, unless they're in a combat area, can go home to family every night. In the Navy families are separated for much of the time.

And, the other reason is cheating. I was in the Navy 25 years. I saw cheating on both sides. And I never did figure out why.

Here's the excuse I heard:"I'm over here all by myself. She's back home with all her family and friends." The excuse I heard from the wife/girlfriend at home was: "I'm here all alone (maybe with a home to manage on her own and kids to raise on her own). He's over there with all his buddies." And both would totally destroy the other if they found out the other was doing what they were doing.

I can't believe it's limited to the Navy. Air Force Bases are pretty stable. That means the the guys can go on liberty pretty much everyday. Army bases are also pretty stable. And perhaps that's it. The Army and Air Force are exposed to women on a regular basis. Furthermore, as has been stated, often family is nearby.

Maybe the reason a sailor cheats is that he's aboard ship for a couple of months... perhaps longer... between in-port periods. Once in port they have an anonymity. They aren't around long enough for anybody to really get to know who they are. There is also availability. There are girls aplenty 'in the business." And, finally, the girls are good at what they do. If a guy has any slightest inclination, they're all over him. As a result, some guys get rolled.

Why do the wives cheat? I don't think they set out to cheat any more than guys do. I think it's just a night out with a couple of of the girls she's met on base. They haven't had any male attention for a couple of months. Some guy buys them a drink... maybe laced with some drug... maybe not... I don 't pretend to know how the female mind works. If there's any inclination in that direction, with the proper (or improper) pitch from the guy maybe they fold like a guy under the prodding of a bar girl.

I believe it is the length of the tours of duty that the husband must go through away from the wife. In the other branches of service, the spouse can go to where ever the service sends their husband to and can stay on base housing with him. In the navy, their husband has to stay on ships, aircraft carriers, and submarines- wives are not allowed at these locations It's a simple matter of gone too long at a time creating too much stress.Do your part by being supportive of your husband.
GOD BLESS THE MILITARY!

Most of the problems come from the 6 month or more deployment and the secrecy of the missions that they are on. When they do come home they can not tell anyone where they were and what they were doing, that alone will lead to arguments and problems. Not to mention you start spending 24 hours a day 6 months at a time living with your buddies then go home to your wife. culture shock to say the least, you don't have the slightest clue as to how to act or what the hell she wants to talk about. It takes a lot of work to make it work and some people just don't want to make the effort .

The deployments can kill a marriage. Even when you are back in port you have the duty one day out of every four or five and must stay onboard the full 24 hours.

The navy talks a good line about caring for families, but in my experience all they care about is getting underway on time.

The Navy gets deployed regardless if their is a war or not, that's why so many get divorced. Unlike the other branches that really don't leave the U.S for long periods unless there is a war. If you think the Navy only goes out to sea for six months a year then you mistaken. You have so many smaller under-ways that you go on throughout the year plus your workup schedule before deployment and God forbid some natural disaster happens throughout the world because I'll guarantee the Navy will be there to help out.

Most shipes may be at sea for 6 to 12 months at a time leaving them to be alone with out the other left and that dose lead to the divorce rate. This is in peace time

bulltwinkies. the divorce rate is around 4%. which, BTW is LOWER than the average civilian divorce rate. Police officers and firefighters have a statistically higher divorce rate.

My friend and her hubby have been married 15 years now. The whole time he has been a navy man. Moving every 4 years to a new city and state. The stress of picking up the whole family and moving away from roots and friends and never really having a permanent home base is a big factor. Also when out to sea contact is very difficult and limited. When her husband is out to sea they basically don't have a marriage. They are at the moment going through a divorce. While out to sea and at ports he fell to the biggest temptation Navy men face-loneliness. She learned of this and thus end of marriage. That is the biggest reason. Also, each time he has returned from sea he is a different person altogether. Hard to feed a marriage when he or she can't be a working part of it.

Most navy guys have to do at least 3 6-mo. tours of duty on ships, so they're gone a lot.

because they either cheat on their spouses when they are in war ... Other reasons sometimes they get merry to soon with out knowing the person well because they get pay more once you are merry

I can understand why. My step-father was in the Army. My weak mother wouldn't leave his neglectful, self-loathing butt. These men often don't relate well to their wives and children, thus leading to a break down in communication and the wife asking for a divorce.

Actually the Armys divorce rate is higher than the Navy and Marine Corps because of longer deployments which puts more stress on the family.
The studies have shown that finances are a major contributed to divorces. Most service members that are married below the rank of E-5 have the most difficulty because the spouse has never experienced living on her own and spends money out of control while the husband is deployed.
Of course being unfaithful is another problem.

Because officers in the navy normally neglect their wives because they are away so much of the time. Also, since they are away so much, they are more likely to cheat...
