Navy need information about Information System Technician (IT)!?

Currently I'm in the SECF program but my recruiter has me in for a rate change for CTN. Yesterday he tells me they have an opening in IT and was wondering if I wanted it. He also mentions that CTN and IT are close to the same without the "Crypto stuff" as he puts it, and that CTN is currently running high and it is very unlikely to get a spot. So I want to gather information about the IT before I commit to anything.
1) Is it true that CTN and IT are similar?
2) How well does this rate work in the Civilain field?
3) One thing I didn't like about CTN was the no traveling thing, From what I hear IT does travel a lot, is this true?
4) What does the job entail? Programming, networking, putting computers together?
5) How likely would I be to get onto a smaller boat?
6) Any information about the job at all that you think I might find useful.

I don't know the specifics of each job, but I can tell you that I was on an aircraft carrier and there were *maybe* 5 total CTN's stationed there out of about 2,000 people. And there were probably around 100 IT's.
Ask the recruiter if s/he can show you a job description for each rate to figure out what the exact differences/similarities are. |

go IT man. where are you going to find a job working with cryptology besides maybe the CIA or FBI and theres a long waiting list for jobs. my buddy at school his wifes friend was in the navy doing IT and made big bucks afterwards.
IT consist of working with Cisco routers, switches. windows server. setting up networks. ton of networks config lines. My friend in the navy says IT's have it easy going. IT is 4 year active 4 reserve not sure with CTN. you get like a $7000 bonus for IT i think. not too shabby. |
