I'm a college student wrapping up my freshman year in college and I'm also currently maintaining a 4.0 GPA but am finding the school work rather easy and wish to possibly join the Army ROTC. I have always had a lingering desire to join the armed services but I am currently on the path to become a Construction Management major and am not really sure if the army offers any careers that may somewhat similar to Construction Management. I've also looked into the Corps of Engineers but I'm very sure what opportunities they may offer that could help. Do you think it is worth joining the ROTC or not? If so, do you have any advice/tips for me? I'd really appreciate some help in making this decision, preferably from someone with firsthand knowledge or prior experience.

Short answer, yes. I am a Naval officer who graduated from Navy ROTC. I have friends who are Army ROTC and from what I understand the Army does not have restricted and unrestricted positions like the Navy. This means that you can get support positions like the Corps of Engineers directly out of college ROTC. If you don't want to join the Corps of Engineers you can join the Seabees in the Navy but it is more difficult out of ROTC. I would advise speaking with a recruiter in addition to the ROTC unit since there are sometimes special programs that will let you be in college as a civilian and then get the job you want after completing OCS. Some of these programs will actually pay more than ROTC and may count time towards retirement. Don't overlook the other services as they have similar jobs.
Finally, don't think that your college degree limits your job choice. I have a degree in ocean engineering and will be a nuclear trained submarine officer. Some of my fellow officers are history majors. Serving in the military with a different job than your major will help diversify your resume for when you decide to retire. |
