All I can say that the Navy was great! The first year was the toughest part, but once you get the routine down and start learning the systems, it gets better! What is your job in the Navy and how long have you been in? The places you visit and the things you will see are priceless experiences. I am not saying everyday will be easy and exciting. Like any other job, you will have bad days and frustrating times. However the adventure and training you receive will outweigh the bad stuff. Many people will tell you they don’t like it because they are so far from home. Well, what did they expect? You can’t get a ship tied in your backyard. This is a chance for you to grow up, learn responsibility, get trained, see other parts of the world, experience different cultures, possibly earn a degree, make some really good friends and serve your country. Stop listening to the opinions of others (except mine LOL), especially if they have never been there themselves!

I wouldn't have done it. It's not bad though. you'll get in shape. you'll meet new people and see new places, but you'll be away from your loved ones for a long time and we're at war right now so it's slightly dangerous...although probably not as dangerous as the army...

My son is in the Navy's Delayed Entry Program. He's a senior in high school and he's also scared but it's something he has wanted since he was a little boy and joining the service is a very honorable thing to do. Enlisting in any branch of the service isn't easy... you should be very proud of yourself. One thing I've noticed with my son, is that a lot of people say he's crazy as well but I tend to think it's more because they can't imagine themselves making the same choice. You're not crazy at all... you're just not afraid of venturing out of your comfort zone. Congratulations and good luck!

Well, that depends on the career you want to pursue. Personally, i would join the Air Force, for their sophisticated technology, however if you are looking for a good ground combat unit, go Marines. Navy is a good field however.

You'll be fine.
You're just getting cold feet. You joined for a reason...just stay focused.

i joined the military when i was 17 and it was the best decision i ever made...sure it was the Army but I went through that "confused" time too, where everyone thought i was crazy. dont let them un-motivate you - there are tremendous opportunities by joining the military - you might not see it now but later on you'll appreciate your decision

I was in the Marines but the similarities outweigh the differences in most cases. It's not the life for everyone, getting up early, taking orders, doing things you really don't want to do. But it can be a rewarding experience. Just remember that if you really really find you hate it there are counselors and such to talk to though your instructors won't let that become common knowledge. Once you join it's not impossible to be discharged (General Discharge) without breaking the law.

KD7ONE
Make the most of it.

If you really want this then you'll love it. Don't worry about what everyone else is saying about your decision. Just listen to what you want.

If you've just joined and haven't gone to basic yet, then you still have time to change your mind. The oath that really matters is the one taken before you ship to basic.

why are you asking other people if you made the right choice, if it is something you really want to do, then do it, if you are having second thoughts, now is the time to get out, before you go to training, its hard to get out once you head out to boot camp, but you can get out if you really want too, before you go, just talk to your recruiter and dont let him bully you , thats there job. good luck with either choice you make

Mia
You've already made the decision, so now all you can do is be positive. Remember that you are doing such a wonderful service for our country. In the process you'll gain a lot of experience and discipline and probably make life long friends. Best of luck and thank you for your service.

I guarentee you you'll have some cool stories to tell if you stay in the navy. but maybe you should learn to fly a kite just incase.

Chef
Being scared is no way to start a military career.

If you have already signed the papers, it's too late for that anyway.

You will be fine. It's the Navy. It's an adventure.

Chill out. We all have our doubts on our first emlistment. By the time your enlistment is ready to expire you will know wether staying in the Navy is right for you.

Yeah, Almost everone I knew at the time I first enlisted told me I was crazy too.

Well I retired 6 years ago at age 40. I live on a tropical island in the Philippines and am young enough to enjoy my life.

My "friends" that said I was crazy are all working 2 jobs to live a decent lifestyle and will be until they are at least 67. By then they will be too old to enjoy life.

So who is the "crazy one ? :)"

Not everyone makes a career out of joining the Navy. But I personally feel that by the end of the first enlistment you'll have figured out what you want to do with your life or at the very least be headed in the right direction.

It's not something I would ever do. I would fear for my life! Thank you for joining!
Good luck!

You have my support! You deserve all of our thanks. You are among those who defend our quality of life. I don't think you should ever let anyone else interfere with your decision to be a patriot.

Could you get out if you wanted to? It is a good thing to protect America and Americans, and I thank you......but if you are not sure you will not do well.

My sister was in the navy for 2 yrs. She now says that she wasn't fond of it because she was so far from home, she was stationed in Gitmo Bay, Cuba. Also, my father was real sick then passed while she was in. It will be an experience for you and you're not going to know for sure until you try it. Good luck!

?
If you have already joined the navy the question is moot....If you haven't yet, join the Air Force, its a lot better training and assignment options and you don't have to spend 6 months riding around the ocean........#####

If you like the sea a lot & if you are a military type of person & discipline person. You have make the right choice. Stick to your decision, don't let others confuse your thinking.

fear not. you will love it,
you'll grow, get a great education and skill,
be part of the finest Navy in the world, see exotic ports of call, send cool stuff home to family and friends,
make real, life long friends and get paid. Enjoy, it's not forever
Thank You for serving.

Chief
I, too, was scared when I joined the Navy back in 1968, but it all worked out fine for me. I worked hard, studied my chosen field, and advanced very quickly. I got to see a lot of different places and, after 22 years, retired as a Chief and now collect a nice pension. Relax, do your best, and enjoy yourself. And thank you for your service to our country.

P.S. - I have a son in the Navy on a ship and another son
serving with the Army in Iraq.

CRD, ya made the right choice!!!! Sail the Seven Seas, cruise the Ivory Coast, sail around the 'Horn". If ya end up in the Middle East you are safe lobbing shells in on Iraq. Now just remember the Cole! Shoot anything coming up to your shipTell your CO they looked like Insurgents and yo were protecting your station. AHOY MATIE!!!!! I have friends who were in the Navy and loved it

Your fear is reasonable. I joined when I was 20 and I freaked out a little just before I left for bootcamp. I have some great wonderful stories about my life in the Navy. I traveled, I partied, I learned a trade, I got everything I could out of it and most of all, I started acting like a grown up. Your friends that are not joining the Navy are saying things like that because you are doing something pretty amazing with your life and they arent. You are courageous! There is nothing to fear about joining.....Boot camp was like being in high school gym and art class....it's a head game, but a real easy one to play. I really hope and pray that this helps you. God Bless you for serving your country. Your about to have the best times of your life.

If this is really what YOU want to do, then do it. It is your life and the decision is yours alone. Sometimes it is hard to make decisions that others don't agree with, but you are the only one qualified to make it. If this is your chosen path, then give it all you've got and you will be sucessful at what you do.

Making this decision is the hardest one you'll ever do. Fear, emotions, happiness is all mixed and when you listen to people it gets more confusing. Here's how I see it, if you stay out do you have a goal or plan? Going to school for a trade or degree? You have to get up every morning and do something. If you enlist you have a instant plan and you'll find your goal and maybe a career. Weight both sides and take the more positive road even if its uncertain. Friends and family will always be afraid for you. So who is not afraid, who has the positive outlook? It's you that has the positive outlook. You made the right decision.
