It is under investigation and they have the guy in the video in protective custody (due to threats made against him).
The punishment will likely be an Article 15 - which can include everything from loss of rank, monetary fine, imprisonment, extra duty, etc... He can also be facing a concurrent less than honorable discharge from the USMC. If the Article 16 is refused, he will be Court Marshaled.
You can look up the specific punishments for an Article 15 on the internet.
And yes, UCMJ action for this type of thing will be much stiffer than what a civilian would face. Even if the video is found to be fake - without doubt he will still be facing punishment due to the negative fallout of his actions.
Not sure what the thumbs downs are for. It's just the way the UCMJ works. No opinion here. |

I've watched the video a few time's and I'm convinced it's a fake. They either had a fake puppy or a real one that was already dead. |

It truly is making me sick, seeing so many damn questions/rants about this. Pick another topic, please.
I saw the video, i think the dog was already dead and the whimpering definitely came from a human. Ive been to Iraq and have seen, literally, hundreds of dogs just wandering the streets of baghdad.....shouldn't you be upset at iraqis for not caring? I mean, if you are this upset about one dog, you should really be upset at iraqis for their lack of respect to dogs. |

I was going to answer this again but it's like the 800th posting of the same question so I won't. |

Usually in the military the punishments are harsher. He will certainly be punished for acting in a way unbecoming of a soldier and probably because of the notoriety of the case he will be in even deeper sh**.
Yep, he can look forward to a life of flipping burgers as well as the scorn of his family for all the negative publicity this has given them too. A true lesson to THINK before you act. Treat all beings as you would like to be treated. |

If it wasn't made public, nothing would happen to him. More than likely they would slap him article 134 conduct unbecoming of a Marine. They will demote him to PFC. but that is really all they can do, but I dont see how they can do anything else to him and I doubt they will be able to prove anything. |

They will most likely give him an dishonorable discharge because of all the negative media attention. My fiancee who is now home from the army says that that is a normal thing over there. Because dogs bark and give up their location. I still think it is pretty rude. That poor puppy. Its not the dogs fault that it is in Iraq. |

I have to wonder if it's authentic. What incentive does a marine have to do this? The backdrop looks like Iraq, but how do you know? I wonder if it's an attempt to make the US military look bad.
It's animal cruelty, and I'm not a huge proponent of capital punishment, but....
btw: no one knows, not respectable news sources or otherwise.
Edit: OK, I just watched it, it's fake, the dogs legs aren't even moving when they throw it! What dog stays in a fetal position when thrown?! The barking sound doesn't dissipate as it goes off in the distance either. |

I've seen the video three times of a Marine throwing a toy dog off a cliff. It was a sad attempt at a joke. He will probably face (at minimum) an Article 15 hearing after being charged with a violation of Article 134 of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice for acts which tend to bring discredit upon the Marine Corps.
But, in the video there is no animated movement by this "puppy". His eyes are not even open. He doesn't show signs of movement while being held. He isn't panting to cool off in the Iraqi heat (dogs don't have sweat glands), his legs aren't flailing about when he is airborne and there is no sign of blood or other effects of blunt force trauma when he makes contact with the ground. The yelping noise was made by another Marine off-camera and does not fade in volume as the dog's distance from the camera increases.
IT'S A STUFFED TOY ANIMAL! |

out side of the military in the USA you could go to jail. I don't know about in the military but hopefully he will at least get a dishonorable discharge plus some jail time |

I am sorry about the puppy but let's put things in prospective these marines are over there risking there lives everyday. They have probably seen things that would make the average civilian crazy so before any of you judge walk a day in there shoes.
Sorry about the puppy but I still feel for the Marines in combat who knows if they are even in there right mind. |

Well he could have thrown a kid over a cliff or an Iraquian or one of his fellow soldiers. I know it's pretty bad to do something like that but what about the torture treatments American's have gotten while POW's under the insergent's? Do you honestly believe they would be that HUMANE? Believe me my buddies in Vietnam suffered far worse while POW's at Hanoi Hilton! |
