There's been a lot of questions about the recent hijackings off the coast of Somalia, so I've written one answer and am posting it on multiple questions.
1. Ethiopia tried to stop all this. The Ethiopian Government asked for help in stabilizing the country and making the government stronger so that it's police and army could fight the pirates and all terrorists. What did the world do? It just turned it's back.It didn't think it was any of their problems. In fact Ethiopia was painted as an invader, and as an American pawn. Now that those same countries are facing the consequences; everyone is outraged.
I say: why are you surprised?
2. Thousands have been dying all over the world: Somalia, Darfur, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel/Palestine, Sri Lanka ... EACH DAY, but when 20 Americans are kidnapped it's 'let's do something' time? Does humanity start and stop at the doors of America? Does the world's concience take a break unless American victims are involved?
I say: welcome to the jungle!
3.Some are asking why President Barack Obama doesn't do something about it. Do any of you remember 'Iran Hostage Rescue Mission: Operation Eagleclaw? It was doomed before it even took off. 'Have you forgotten the rash decisions that led to the 'Black Hawk Down' incident? It was started as an operation to save American lives. The ********* of thinking that being armed with the latest weapons can eliminate all obstacles in a battle was cold-****** within a few hours. President Obama has to think TWICE before jumping in with both feet. All the people that are saying 'do something' right now, will be singing a different tune should a single casualty (American) be incurred. Shooting all the pirates and/or bombing the whole nation of Somalia is NOT the solution, it runs much too deeper.
I say: maybe ALL of us should be in tune with humanity.

Track the ships back to the ports where they come from. Track the pirates back to their home bases. Go there and kill them all. Problem solved! |

Blinding violence has always resulted in them playing nice for decades at a time.
There's a prerequisite though, before that can happen. Stop voting for Democrats. They consider hostile foreigners to be allies. |

Make countries responsible for the protection of their own cargo and ships. We have to many problems now to worry about other countries cargo. We should have handled Somalia when we had the chance but we can't afford to invade and prop up Somalia now. |

1) The cargo ships generally do have an armed security force onboard.
2) The US & European countries (plus other non-US, non-European countries) do have a group to prevent piracy, but we can't go around just "attacking mother ships". For one, sometimes we don't know they are pirate ships. For another, we can do "approach & visit" ops but we can't just shoot/capture ships at will. The anti-piracy coalition is called CTF 151 and is currently headed by RDML Terry McKnight, USN. It includes ships from several different nations and patrols the Gulf of Aden, primarily.
In answer to your question - the way we deal with Somali pirates is helping Somalia establish a non-extremist government that can actually control its waters, because right now there is no ruling government. |

If you are waiting for our Pres to do something it will be a long wait I am afraid. He wants to change the way the world looks at the U.S. Do you think Obama will fly Air Force One out there, walk on water, and talk to them nice, nice ?We don't want the world to think we are mean, they will hate us again!!! |

Most of the effing European countries don't let ships under their flag own weapons.
FWIW, the few RORO boats that I dealt with always had well stocked weapons lockers, but they were US flagged. |

Let it be known that a very large cargo ship carrying diamonds is out to sea and have a small group of seals stowed away in a cargo hold until one of those Captain hook MF'n pirates tries to take it hostage. I can leave the rest up to your imagination! |

Easy, invade Africa and stop the pirates on land when they spend their loot. It's not hard to figure out where they are after getting some money, track em down ans use warships to pound ground locations. Local villagers are giving them support, put everyone in danger and see what happens. Only way is to root them out. |

Ok remember that our troops where running for there lives out of Mogadishu?No disrespect to those who served but it is the truth.This has been going on for years just because the news doesn't have as many reports of those bogyman under americas bed known only as spooky TERRORISTS! We here about somalia again.For all those who think about invading do some research.I feel that company's who can afford multi million dollar ships and cargo can hire a PMC or private police force or something.
