PT test (the run)_____?
|
i have a month before i ship out to basic training. im tryin to get promoted before i leave by passing a pt test and studying rank structure, orders, and that type of stuff. my problem is that i cant run 2 miles in 15 mins like i need to in order to get promoted. im not even sure if im ready to go to basic training with the way i run. on some days i do good, for me anyways. i run 2 miles in about 17 mins. other days i cant run the full 2 miles without slowing down. basically im feelin pretty discouraged and dont know what to do to improve and thinkin about just droppin out of the DEP program. i need some advice Additional Details this is for the Army

Didn't I already answer this question, and got the best answer?!
All joking aside, it takes a bit of time to increase your run time by minutes. I honestly think you'll be fine, and the Army will work with you on this issue. The Army always needs people, and will work with you to meet your goals. Speak with your recruiter, and tell him your issues. I don't know about Army, but The Marines would have a small group of people that are on DEP. They would schedule mornings for this group to run together, a mini-boot camp you could say, and the people would make the run. It's funny I had a hard time running also, but when you run with a comrades you get that sense of being part of something, and this sense pushes you that extra mile. You'll have people that run faster than you fall back, and run behind you pushing you to go faster. Good luck. |

Do three runs a week, alternating a day off between each run day. Do two minutes of push ups, two minutes of sit ups and then go run. This makes sure you are as tired as you would be during a real PT test before you start running. Do sprint drills once a week (60 seconds sprinting, 120 seconds walking, repeat 12 times), then do a medium distance run as fast as you can (2.5) miles, and then do a slow long distance run (4 miles) and then repeat this every week. I don't know your level of fitness so if you feel like you are going to injure yourself, slow down or change the program. |

hey man, i feel your pain, im joining the army in a few weeks and i have asthma, but i was wantin to see what i could do the 2 mile in, i did it in 1530, my asthma was killing me but you have to just keep pushin on. and trust me when you get to bootcamp there will be people that cant even run a mile without stopping,. they build you up for your running. next time you run, take deep breaths like your yawning when you run, itll give your body more oxygen so you wont get tired as fast, and if you stop its ok, just do it for like 10 seconds then get right back o running |

well if you are a female you should be fine. but if you are a male then you need to start running. you dont want to push yourself to hard. but start off with running one full mile everyday. then rest one day and then run 2 miles. you need to do this constantly if you want to pass. since you are leaving in month. and dont worry about not being in great shape in basic training because they make you get in shape. most people go into it not working out a day in their life. but good luck bct was a pain but it is all worth it! |

If you cannot run 2 miles in less than 17 minutes wearing running shorts, and carrying no load at all, you are going to have a very difficult time in Basic. When I was in 7th grade, I remember the slowest boy in my PE class ran at about that pace on the Presidential Fitness Test. Most boys ran at around a 7:00 per mile pace or faster. It is not difficult to build cardiovascular strength, in other words the heart and lungs and circulatory system, but it is not going to happen in a month. It actually takes longer to build the joints and connective tissues to the point where running injuries are not likely to be sustained, than it does to build cardio strength. Injuries are far more likely when running and hiking with loads. It will take you about 2-3 months to be at the level you should be at to start Basic, if Basic is not going to be an extreme challenge. I posted this 29 week running program in an earlier answer:
https://www.netc.navy.mil/nstc/otcn/Common/PFA/PFA_Running_Program.htm
You are at about the 12-14 week level. Also take a look at this website for workouts to build core and upper body strength:

I suggest leaving the DEP and getting fit, I also suggest considering applying to the ECP at one of the military JC's- Georgia Military College, Wentworth Military Academy, Marion, NMMI or VFMC- you will have time to prep before entering the LTC(Leadership Training Course) at Fort Knox Kentucky this summer and you will commission as an Army 2nd Lieutenant in 2 years. I believe the application deadline is May 15. An army rotc "college program" scholarship will pay the tuition as long as you have met the academic requirements.

If you have not yet taken the SAT Reasoning Test, the deadline to apply for the May 2 test is this Friday April 17.

Other than omitting to capitalize the first word of every sentence, your writing style indicates that you are an intelligent guy and will easily be able to make a high enough score on the critical reading portion so that the math score can be minimal. The scholarship also requires a 2.5 hs GPA. Even without the scholarship(2.0 HS GPA/850 SAT Critical Reading and Math) nmmi is feasible with only the federal financial aid that will be forthcoming by submitting the fafsa by the May 1 priority deadline:
http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
After leaving the army, you could utilize the GI Bill to pay for graduate or professional education.
On graduation from the university an ECP 2nd Lieutenant is advanced in rank and goes on active duty as a 1st Lieutenant with two years time in grade for pay purposes. He is making $17,000 per year more than a freshly commissioned 2nd Lt. Calculate regular military compensation at the link. Location makes a significant difference due to the housing allowance(BAH.) Single Enlisted Sailors and Coasties ranking below E-5, Enlisted Marines and Soldiers ranking below E-7, Enlisted Airmen below E-4 live in the barracks and do not collect BAH:
http://www.defenselink.mil/militarypay/mpcalcs/Calculators/RMC.aspx
2nd Lt( Army, Air Force, Marines) = Ensign(Navy, C.G.) = O-1.
1st Lt( Army, Air Force, Marines) = Lt JG(Navy, C.G.) = O-2.
Captain( Army, Air Force, Marines)= Lt(Navy, C.G.) = O-3.
Advancement to O-2 around the 18th month.
Advancement to O-3 by about 42nd month
Good Luck! |
