Parents Do not support USMC?

My parents do not support my decision becoming a Marine. will they ever support me? will they be proud their son is a UNITED STATES MARINE?

Lori
It depends. It is hard for some parents because they are afraid for you. Marines live a hard life, but they are very proud of what they do as they should be. After you graduate bootcamp they will probably come around. But they will always worry about you. Try having your recruiter talk to them if they have questions and tell them why you are doing it. Don't let their opinions change your mind. If you let your parents feelings affect your decision you are not ready to be a Marine. They military is one of the best things you can do with your life. Goodluck!

They can support you, without supporting your career. I was in desert storm and found out that my mother was back in the states demonstrating against the war, during my time in the gulf.

If I were to guess, their reaction is a combination of fear and ignorance.

They are probably afraid of what could happen to you, no parent wants to outlive their kid, and maybe they fear that's what will happen.

Do they know anything about the Corps, other than what they've seen on the news and in movies?

Let's face it, among some people, the military has a reputation just slightly higher than muggers. It's not true, but they have never been told anything different.

They may never support your decision, but they should eventually accept it, maybe that's the best you can hope for.

Good luck, and welcome to the military.

Well it depends on their reasons for not supporting your decision. If it's just out of concern for your being hurt/killed, they will always be concerned in that way. But they will come around to be proud. My father was dead-set against my joining the Air Force. But that changed over time as he saw the wonderful life experiences I gained. By the time, I retired, you couldn't have found a prouder Dad. I suspect that will be the case for you too.

Good luck.

Some people will always want to enjoy the freedom which the military provides while being the most vocal against the very people who provide that freedom

I don't know about your family but for me, I can tell you what happened when I joined.

When I joined the Navy my mom told me that she was disappointed in me and that I should have married someone instead...(I'm a girl so it is a little different).

At any rate she was just scared for me and said some really stupid stuff. Some of it was hurtful, but I don't think she meant to be mean.

After a while she came around and learned that I was doing really good for my self and was actually doing something with my life and she told me that she was proud of me. She got used to the idea of her little girl being in the military and that I really liked it and all.

Maybe they still think of you as a kid. Maybe they are just scared about anything bad happening to you and don't know how to express it...

I think once you are grown and mature enough to make your own decisions it is hard for parrents to let go. They had "control" of your for most of your life and made those decisions for you....once you join and start doing fine they will let go and see that you are a grown man and they will be proud of you. Give them time.
