Please somebody enlighten me, What exactly is meant by winning the war in Iraq, what will have been won ?

I personally don't know what the U.S.A. will have won from the war in Iraq, and how will they know if they actually have won ? Especially because the war was a personal war of the Bush family.

This is not to upset anyone and discredit your opinions, so on that note I think Emeradd you are forgeting what the point of this war initially was - 911- proven to not be related to Iraq, also it was because Saddam was suppose to have weapons of mass destruction, not so. I really do not think the mentality of Iraq or most middle eastern countries will ever completely change, and I do not mean this to be negative.

I think the United States will achieve a victory if Iraq can become a stable democratic country that holds fair elections & isn't controlled by Islamic extremists. And if Iraq's government will cooperate with the US in combating Islamic terrorism. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but I hope it does.

Winning means we can all come home without watching the country collapse behind us.

Btw...I love comments like "the war was a personal war of the Bush family". When we first waged war in '03, everyone was for it, everyone was behind it, and everyone wanted it.

What happened?

Winning the war in Iraq means having a stable Democratic nation allied to the US in the Gulf. Since the resolution to remove Saddam was passed and signed in the late 90s this was hardly a "personal war" no more than the war on Germany was personal for FDR.

" it is a personal war of the bush family"

funny you put no blame on the democrats.

Without dems in the senate voting for the war there is no war.

Leaving before the country is secure means every American that died lost their life in vain. We must complete what we started. Running away from a problem is a mistake we made in Vietnam, lets not make the same mistake again.

It will mean stability for that region, and the people will no longer be oppressed. Those people lived in fear under Saddam because if they spoke out against him they were executed. Women were treated less than human. Saddam used wmd against some of his own people too.

I'm in the USMC, and its really infuriating to hear "its a personal war of the Bush family". Even if you honestly believe that, how can you flaunt that opinion while people are dying in this war? Doesn't the psychological damage of your comment mean -ANYTHING- to you?

But... in answer to your question. Right now we're trying to make the Iraqi army and government able to stand on its own. They don't have much resources, very limited training and you're asking people that have lived life-long hells of terror and fear to suddenly govern themselves and fight their former oppressors.

Mayhap you're an isolationist who didn't care about the cities that were mustard bombed, or the Nazi-style death camps we found that had Kurds dying in the thousands... but for every life I've helped save over there, that was "winning the war" to me.

Great question - star.

When the Cowboys play the Redskins for 60 minutes you look at the scoreboard. Boys have 28 points and Skins 21, Boys WIN. That is defined.

What is victory in Iraq? Bush has no idea. Is it the partitioning of the country to Shia, Sunni and Kurd? A dictatorship of former SH supporters? A freely elected government?

For those who picked a free government, here is the fly in your ointment. Iraq is majority Shia. Know who else is Shia? Google Iran for the shock of your life. Bush spent trillions to set up a super-cell of anti-American Shia! Brilliant.

Changing it from a despotic Muslim country, into a model of Democracy - that is what the politicians would consider `winning the war`.
Sadly, it`s looking as tho it ain`t gonna happen.

It`s costing too much. The American Public is fed up with it. And those pesky car-bombers and WHY just won`t go away.

Personally, I never really thought of it as a `War` in the first place. It seemed more like an assault on a country, to me.
But at the same time, I certainly was not sorry to see Hussain outed and deleted.

I'm glad someone besides myself wonders about that. I thought we went in to get Bin Laden. I'm not really sure what happened to that. I agreed with the war at first but now....no. I feel that the American people were lied to just so Bush could ride in like a cowboy on a horse and do what he wanted. So just like you I get really confused when Bush and McCain talk about "winning" the war.

nothing, the war was waste of time and many innocent people and money. that's all.

What will have been won will be the right for America to have air control over Iraq and for Soldiers and support staff and contractors to have immunity from prosecution in Iraqi courts. We will have won the right for our troops to be able to carry out attacks on Iraqi neighbors with impunity. Basically we will have won the right to treat Iraq as an occupied colony without any of the annoying responsibility.
Also you can bet that once all the American demands have been granted by the Iraqi government that somehow miraculously it will be the right time to bring back the majority of the troops. Except those left in garrisons there.
We will win the ability to do what we like in someone elses country with no regard for its cit zens or its neighbors.
