I'm talking to a recruiter sometime this month, and after I graduate I'm going to enlist. I just need to know if it is really as tough as everyone makes it out to be. I'm currently training with my cousin who thinks everything is a joke, he told me that it was nothing like what people say. He's a Pvt First Class. I just need some second and third opinions. Is boot camp really all that bad?
What are the PT expectations for a female recruit?

I disagree when the other responder said it isn't as tough as they say: It is. However, it isn't awful. If you are serious about becoming a Marine start getting into shape now! Be in excellent condition before you arrive at the recruit depot. It makes it much easier. Also remind yourself you can do ANYTHING for 13 weeks. Also keep in mind they don't want to wash you out if they do not have to. They would prefer to see you succeed (although you won't believe it when a hat is screaming at you for looking sideways).
I'm not certain of the PT for women (when i was in we didn't have them. But, I have been to the MCRD at Parris Island after women started training there. It isn't quite as demanding for the women simply due to average size, upper body strength, etc. But, it is hard!
The Marines publish the expected physical outcomes for recruits. i am sure you can look it up.

Your cousin is correct. It isn't nearly the nightmare that people would have you believe. PT will dog you out, but you will find that they do it so the PT test is not so grueling once you are in a bit better shape than when you joined. You will be yelled at a lot. Deprived of a little sleep and you will march till you wish your legs would just fall off. It is temporary.
Look at it like this. Almost everyone who tries to join succeeds. It isn't designed to make you fail. Just the opposite. |
