Pretty straight forward/ Army question?

Can general practitioners perform the psychiatric evaluations needed for a waiver intot he army?

My husband was put out on a RE:3 Personality Disorder There is another code and I totally forgot what it is but it is code 10 which apparently a good thing.

He needs to get a waiver to reenter, and he has a appt with a psychiatrist, BUUUUT it's $300 dollars. If he absolutly has to have it from a psychiatrist we will pay for it, but if he can get it from his GP it would be alot cheaper.

Just trying to save a bit of money, I have a little one and there are things he needs.

The $330 figure is from the actual behavioral center. I called and talked to the nurse and she said that is the price for an eval.

A GP (General Practitioner) is not a Psychologist. Two completely different areas of medical training. Your Family Physician (GP) has absolutely NO formal educational background in giving Psychiatric advice which is why you have Psychiatrists in the first place.

with an RE:3 Personality Disorder, the outlook for your husband getting back in the military is grim. Disorders of this nature, if it is absolute accurate, would require him to be place on medication.

One Evaluation from the doctor will not be enough to make a determination if your husband is good to go. The doctor would have to have a pattern over time to make any type of determination. So, your looking at $300? Try a few thousand dollars once all the evals are done.

Waivers of this nature are not very common. So even if he did have the counseling, the outlook is still grim on a waiver being approved.

Long story short, save your money, we are 30% overstrength right now and not accepting waivers or prior service at this time. Maybe after the summer is over he could come back in, but for right now, there would be no point in him trying.

I am currently a recruiter and i just sent up a waiver for a guy who got out for the same thing. He already had all the documents from a civilian doctor stating that he was %100 "normal" and had no signs of mental disorder. The Doctor denied the waiver and permenitly Disqualified him.... Save your Money

Your problem is the psych boy is a specialist,the GP isn't.The military might not accept the GP evaluation.

The GP needs to also have a certificate of proficiency in that specialty.

Where are you getting the $300 figure from?

You should be able to find a psychiatrist to perform the evaluation at their hourly rate, and if the hourly rate is too high, then I would suggest finding one that works on an sliding pay scale. There are a lot of them out there.

Try looking at psychologytoday.com

A GP won't cut it because they're not a specialist in the field like a qualified psychiatrist.
