Pros and Cons of becoming an Officer in the Air Force?
|
Here is what I want to get out of the Air Force Officer route if I choose.
- Travel and live in another country
- Security Clearance
-
- Time to save money to purchase a home after I've done my time
- Money for graduate/law school
- Get some experience
- SERVE MY COUNTRY
Here's me now:
- 22 years old/Male
-BS degree in Industrial Technology (GPA 2.63)
- Physically fit 6 foot 205lbs
- Couple of internships as an Industrial Engineer Intern & Lab Intern for SAIC
I want to work as an Acquisition Manager, Cost Analysis Officer, Financial Management Officer, positions like that. I need to know that the chance of me getting what I want (first list) out of the commitment will be worth it.
Advice/opinion from someone going through the OCS process, looking to become an officer, retired Air Force Officer/Captain greatly appreciated.
[[Please don't answer if you don't have any knowledge concerning the issues and/or the process]]
Additional Details
- Pros/Cons would be appreciated
- Benefits/Salary/Compensation info also appreciated

There’s a lot of information available on pay and benefits. This retired officer is not going to repeat it. See the links under "sources."
The pros:
Pay is relatively good, and gets better with longevity. If you want to travel, the opportunities are there...in the right career field. There are more stateside than overseas opportunities for acquisition officers. Plenty of education opportunities with tuition assistance, GI Bill, Air Force Institute of Technology, Funded Legal Education Program. Opportunities to lead and command.
The cons:
You are at the top end of the weight range and will struggle to meet standards as you get older. The maximum weight for a male 6 feet 0 inches (72 inches) is 202 pounds. See for yourself in the source document Air Force Instruction 48-123 Volume 2 page 88.
I haven’t seen selection board stats recently but 2.5 GPA used to be considered rock bottom. Your GPA is below average; you will need exceptional AFOQT scores to be competitive for selection. Your chances of getting your first choice of career field hinge on Air Force needs, and fluctuate from one board to the next.
If you’re interested because of what you can get out of it...you’ll be disappointed. If you’re disciplined and willing to SERVE, the rewards will follow. If you decide that you’re up to the task, I wish you luck. |
