Pros and Cons of joining Navy?

The navy is an excellent way to pay for college if you plan to spend less than $42000 and if you plan to do it after you get out of the military. The reason being is that the VA and TA educational programs will not pay for classes you took prior to joining, so if you plan to come in you should get accepted into OCS as soon as possible, OCS candidates get there education paid for before they have been commissioned. The difference between Active duty Navy and the Navy reserves is that one is working for the Navy full time and the reserves only work a weekend a month and an additional two weeks a year. But for a commissioned officer you will serve a minimum of five years as an Active Reserve officer and than you can choose to either get out or go to the inactive reserves, when you do your minimum five years you will most likely go to two different duty station, the first one will most likely be 4 years of deployable sea duty followed by two years of non-deployable shore duty. Your girlfriend is smart to be nervous, it is very hard on your better half. The statistics on divorce in the military is very high. Instead of a job choice you should be thinking of it as a life choice. I hoped i helped you with making the right decision.

I spent 18 years in the navy, and am neither gay nor dead..
I saw parts of the world that the average person will never get a chance to see, unless they have big money. The uniforms, while not the greatest, are still pretty good.. better than the stuff they had us wearing where we looked like cheap executioners, back in the mid 80's..
cons? well, yes, you can get killed while aboard your ship, but, then, if that's your main concern, you need to stop driving as well. go to your recruiter and talk to him/her and get the real info that you need.. hopefully, you've finished high school, and have your diploma.. good luck, and Godspeed

But since you've asked for Navy or ex-Navy emails, looks like you really want their advice.

Anyway since I live in the UK and I'm currently out of a job, I can take a part time Bachelors/Degree for free!

Oh and note the problems of joining the military and wearing the Dragon skin armor, noting the believe that joining the military is there for one reason only, aye to see you die. You might face the same problems in the Navy. That is, your leaders wish you to kill and die. If you ever you ever do join the Navy, ask around for what Navy officers consider to be the greatest Navy battle. If it's anything like the one that some top ranking military officers believe, such as the more loss of life, the better... then to hell with such inhumane people that fail to recognize the greatness of such battles where the numbers were 10-1 and not a single loss of life on either side but minority won.

So do you want to join Rome's army? Or do you want to be a disciple of the messiah? Take your pick, one will give your greatness, the other great suffering.

you get killed, do about 700 pushups at 2 in the morning, get killed again, shot twice in the legs, hit with artillery, and then the seargent makes you do a couple thousand more pushups.

Navy Reserves is one weekend a month and two weeks during the summer and active duty Navy is a full-time job.

Pro: You get to be at sea

Con: It is not as hardcore as Marines or Army

Pros and Cons of being in the Navy from a Six Year Navy Vet. Now serving in the Army...

Pros: Seeing the world, meeting new people, serving your country, navy paying off college bills, sea duty pay. As an officer you'll get a stateroom kinda like a mini hotel room you share with one other officer. you get better uniforms then enlisted and better treatment also.
Cons: Yes in every job that has to do with the Military or military affiliated jobs you have a possibility of dying but, I look at it this way. I would rather die knowing that I was doing a great service to my country then die of accidental death, drug overdose or etc.... Yes depending on what field you choose to become you might get stuck out to sea for a very long time away from your girlfriend make sure she fully is capable of handling the stresses of everyday life without you there for moral support.

Also like someone said before me talk to your recruiters about this bring your g/f parents, ie... anyone else. Read your contract from cover to cover. Trust me you will thank yourself in the long run and finally get everything you are "guaranteed" in writing.

I'm a vet and know benefits and contract demands change constantly. especially in war time

get everything in writing. FIRST.

Good people in the Navy but you have to remember this. They will be your new family. You will be gone 9 months out of a year. (I was told "Buy a Camera and watch your wife grow old and watch your kids grow up in pictures") You will only be home a few months out of a year. With going out on a ship and training you will only have two months at a time home. You can forget a good family life because the Navy will request and need 100% of your life. Your wife will get a pay check and have plenty of food and a roof over her head but she won't have or see you very much. You will work 80 to 90 hours a week. (Work and sleep) Really not much of a life. If you join all I can say is "Good luck"
