Question about Army Reservist in my class.?

We found out one of our classmates is an Army Reservist. It turns out he hasn't reported to any drill time since August 2008 and is using VA benefits to pay for class. He's also talked about receiving a letter back in October he had 30 days to report to the nearest reservist command to drill that he has blatantly ignored. What could happen to him, and could any of us be held responsible for not reporting him to the nearest Army MP command or local law enforcement? I'd like references as well. Thanks.

None of you will get in trouble for not reporting him. It isn't like he committed a felony.
He on the other hand will regret not reporting to his unit. He will be eventually kicked out of the military and any VA benefits he took advantage will depend on what he is using. I have also heard of units that send MPs or even regular police (since many police are veterans) to the house to pick up the Soldier. I've even gone to a Reserve Soldier's house to physically take him to the unit.
If he used to be Active Duty and got an Honorable Discharge and he is using those benefits then he will not have to pay those back. In order to use those he just needs to fulfill his active duty obligations.
If he is in his first 6 years of an Army Reserve contract and is using the Reserve VA benefits then he will get a huge bill. If he doesn't pay that money back... the government can just take it through his tax returns and even going strait to his paycheck. I had a friend that got a bill from the Army after he got out... he didn't pay it so the government took it strait from his civilian paycheck. |

no, at some point he will be tripped up and charged with fraud.

His VA benefits may not be affected by his current military status until he is dishonorable discharged down the line. He could be joking about it, he will get caught eventually and his unit will send the MP's I would stay out of it. |
