Congratulations on your choice in joining the military.

To answer your questions:

Missouri depends on the time of year, but in a few weeks it'll be summer. So, fairly temperate to warm. Very nice place to be during the summer months if you don't like to be too hot or too cold.

You cannot have a cell phone with you and, unless you long to be teased by your drill instructors, you'll leave it at home and have your family bring it to your graduation.

You won't be able to use email either but you'll be forced (though you'll enjoy it) to write letters back home. You'll also have the option of using a pay phone on Sundays with the aid of a calling card (bring one with lots of minutes with you.)

There are TONS of useful things to bring but the one that I can reccomend the most is a black permanent marker. In basic a lot of people lose things throughout the course of the days and, rather than buy new, they steal things. So, you take your marker and write the last four of your social on everything you own. Prevents theft and, in addition, will make you friends as everyone will want a marker to use on their own belongings but won't have one handy. Your recruiter will give you a list of everything to bring and it's all pretty basic stuff. Pack light as you'll be headed to the PX on your third day at basic with a $300 debit card.

Runs in basic are typically about six miles but they can be longer or shorter depending on how your DI is feeling that day. If your platoon has angered him in some way he'll run you until you all collapse. If he thinks you're all in good shape and on good behavior it can be shorter. There's typically about an hour of designated "PT time" per day.

When you're packing your bags, leave anything silly at home. Don't bring pictures of your girlfriend because the DI will say something to the effect of, "Is this cow your girlfriend? You know she's at home F***ing some other guy right now, don't you?"

Don't bring any clothes with writing on them. That includes the shirts you may have gotten from your recruiter because the DI will pick on you. Plain white is the way to go for shirts and plain jeans are the best bet in the pants department. Good luck to you and email me if you have any other questions bjsnyder@hotmail.com
