Question about becoming a navy SEAL...?

Go into the Navy, if your going to be a navy seal it would make more sense. When being a seal, your going to have to be in the navy for a long time. Training for a seal is like three years long. I would suggest going into the coast guard. it would be easier and they do somewhat the same stuff, like SAR (search and rescue). I talked to my uncle who was in the Navy for like 15 years about being a SEAL and he said thats the toughest work of everything and its ton and tons of training. I would say when in a pool start using strokes to swim and swim a lot.

Swimming is almost as automatic as breathing for a SEAL. A huge part of their training is conducted in/on/around water. As far as being a Marine or Ranger before trying out for the SEALS, those are 3 different services. SEALS are Navy. So you would have to be in the Navy to try out.

generally if you are joining ANY military branch you need to know how to swim. If you plan on trying out and being successful in ANY special operations field you need to know how to swim really well.

One of my co-workers is a former Navy SEAL, and this is what he told me: You have to be an EXCELLENT swimmer (and you must also be in tip-top physical condition) to be accepted for Navy SEAL training. The SEALs regularly swim several miles in the ocean for their "routine" daily workouts, so if you can't do at least 2,500 yards in a pool (that's 100 lengths, BTW) you'll never make the first cut for the SEALs.

Also, FYI -- the poster who said the Rangers, the SEALs, and the Marines are all in different branches of the service is 100% dead-on-target correct. Rangers are Army, SEALs are Navy, and Marines are (obviously) Marines. You'll need to make your choice before talking to a recruiter. Trying to switch from one branch of the service to another is becoming more and more difficult, so your best bet is to make a choice and then stick with it.

For an Army Ranger, top physical condition with emphasis on Running distances with a decent speed would be good. While the SEALs are based mostly water based. Try Swimming in the Ocean (if you live close by to one) That will bring your swimming skill up, as well as getting your body used to colder water. 2 things needed in SEAL training.
