WhenI first started talking to a recruiter he was adamant that I could get a $20,000 enlistment bonus. Unfortunately, my MOS is basically been limited to Infantry, and he says he can only offer me $4000...
One week later, he called back and said..."Look...I did some work on your packet, and I can get you $8000 with a 3 year active commitment, and 5 year reserves."
I feel like im dealing with a car salesman...can I haggle the bonus. If I hold out longer do you think my bonus will increase again? Or was it a fluke?

I wouldn't haggle. The recruiter is probably doing his best for you. |

They always fluctuate, but with the economy being what it is, they don't need any one person as bad. Hence the bonuses being really low right now. I think the 8,000 is pretty damn good. Most people don't get any. |

They'll probably got back up. Right now the military's recruitment is at 160% of the goal. You even have to score a 50 on the ASVAB instead of the 31 to get in now. |

This isn't a negotiation. It's all computer regulated and policy driven. You don't write a figure on a piece of paper and give it to him, and then he goes to the sales manager and they come back with a new figure. It does not work that way. The Army is offering you what they offer you. He's giving you different options with different payments. Is that 3x5 including 5 years in the IRR or in an active drilling status? Recruiting is great right now. If you haggle, all that's going to happen is he is going to stop calling you and go on to the next guy. You have no leverage. People want what he is selling. You can act now and start earning a paycheck and building time in service towards promotions and raises or you can play games and wait and hope that the economy recovers fast, bonuses go way back up and then you can get that $20,000 that is going to be broken down into so many payments that it won't even matter in the grand scheme of things. |
