Question about the Army?

My husband recently talked to an Army recruiter that told him he would get all of the benefits of an enlistee while working as a civilian.
He said that he would start off as an E-4 because he has 10 years of experience as a truck driver with a cdl. Can someone please explain this better? While it is a great deal, I feel that a civilian should not get all of the benefits that an active military person deserves.

I got some sad news for you... Civillians often times make 2 or 3 times more than military personnel working the same job. The reasoning behind that is when the Military first started opening contracting positions with GS ratings allowing them occupation along side the troops. They were also originally paid the same.
Unfortunately the Military (as everybody knows) doesnt pay anything. So they were only able to drag in underqualified personnel that didnt accomplish anything. The strategy changed, it had to. The civillian world offered the same people more competetive salaries and pay scales versus the military equivelant. Once the military upped the pay scale for civillians they had more competant staffing.

So instead of "why do civillian associated military workers make more than those in the military?" we ALL should be asking why are we paying our boys and gals in uniforms such crappy rates for the same jobs civillians are doing...

An Army recruiter does not have the authority to place him in a civilian position. Was he talking to a reserve recruiter? That's a completely different ball game.

Is he joining the Army or working as a civilian contractor for the Army? E-4 is an enlisted grade in the Army, not a GS-4 which is government service to a pay grade of 4 in civilian work for the Federal Government. If he is enlisting into the service, they are taking into account his professional experience as a civilian and have given him an E-4 rank and/or pay grade. If he is working as a civilian contractor for the Army or and branch of Federal Government I would imagine it should be a GS-4, again predicated upon prior work experience.

He's probably talking about the reserves..... As matter of fact, I'm almost certain he is.

h e is misunderstanding.. for one E4 is an ENLISTED paygrade.. so he would be enlisting. they DO have a program for people who have significant real world experience to enter at advanced paygrade and not have to go through AIT. this sounds like what your DH is being offered. but he WILL be a Soldier.
