After Desert Storm Saddam had to sign a treaty that involved sanctions. Such as not keeping any biological weapons, or having limitations on the size of their military. During many years, Sadamm began violating many of these sanctions. What made it worse was the timing and discovery of the violations of the treaty (after 9/11). Investigators from the United Nations went to Iraq and Saddam would only allow them to go certain places, kept them out of others, and kicked them out of the country at one time. He violated over 41 sanctions that were placed on him for the atrocities he committed on the people of Kuwait. Go to Iraqwar.gov or the military website. They have full documentation of the investigations that went on. Further information: Russia was taking money from Iraq thus the reason they didn't want to go to war and was adamantent it was a scandal that was only slightly reported, France was involved as well.

All you are going to find, for now, are theories and government mis information(only to keep things confidential that need be.) Personally, I believe we are there for many reasons, least of which has to do with 9/11. Thats what Afghanistan and other clandestine operations are for. I, on a personal knowledge level, believe we are there because of the way he had consistantly broken the treaty of the no flyzone, aggression towards the Kurds and blatant disregad for the sanctions imposed on him. I have seen first hand the devastation he caused on the Kurdish villages to the North. Why, if he has shown no regard for the laws imposed on him, would he not give a second thought to giving his WMD programs to Islamic fascists to harm us? To invade Iraq was a sad bud necessary bid for survival. During my stint as a Persian Gulf war participant nad after a Operation Southern Watch participant, I have seen first hand the blatant disregard for the sanctions and the inability of Clinton to do anything about it. There are also other reasons for us to be in Iraq. Oil is far from it. If it was, we would have just come in and occupied Iraq and plundered the oil. What stands between us and disaster is the strategic location of Iraq. We are the magnet of trouble while we are there, we interfere with Irans operations, Jordan is pissed because the **** faces that are gorilla tactic users hit us and then bail to Jordan which, if we wanted, we would be in Jordan also. It is alot of reading but well worth it if you are really looking for the truth and have a brain large enough to fill in the blanks of the pages that have been removed by censorship.

We are doing the best thing we possibly could to get Bin Laden. Us not getting him at all. The way we are going about capturing him is to let them do the work. Let his own people capture and kill him. If we caught him and killed him, guess what? Martyrdom for him and a future of attempted terror strikes against us. Yeah, they are not really helping as much as we would like but the alternative is MUCH worse. We were able to outright destroy Saddam because he ruled by fear not religion. Al Quieda rules by fear but its a fear of a higher power. We are in Afghanistan to face his "fighters" to allow the "friendlies" to capture him.

I understand that sometimes a question like this attracts nitwits and extremists, but I trust devildawg's answer. I haven't read general Zinni's autobiography yet, but I trust Gen. Zinni's information completely.

No war starts for "good" reasons, and our involvement in Iraq, just like our involvement in Vietnam may be ill conceived. The fact of the matter is, we can't undo it. We are there, and there is only one way to extricate ourselves, VICTORY. I bet there are 58,000 guys,, who would have been better served if we were allowed to win Vietnam. Let's not make the same mistake again.

I will give you the short answer.
President Bush was given intelligence from may different agencies, that Saddam Hussein was in posetion of chemical weapons. Saddam was violating many United Nations Resolutions and nothing was being done about it. Some European Nations were also violating the United Nations rulings by purchasing oil from Saddam. President Bush sent us in to put a stop to any and all possible actions by Saddam.
We went into Afghanistan to get Osama/Al-Qaeda. I hope this starts to answer some of your question.

Here's what you do. get a few search engines loaded in your favorites, google, yahoo, ask, msn, so on. Next, grab a notepad and a pencil and think of some questions that you need answered. When using the different search engines, play around with the wording, things like, Iraqi war, or US war in Iraq. This is something that will take some time to do so be prepared for some long sessions at the 'puter, (fresh coffee and Visine).

Timelines are a good thing to use, what happened on 9/11 here in the US. What was going on in Panama at the same time. I know it sounds BORING! But you might find out something that everybody else overlooked.

All I know is that the UN gave Saddam 8 months warning about the upcoming inspection for WMDs. The CIA and NSA and whoever deals with intelligence brought the attention to Congress. Bush only went on the instinct of the CIA's intelligence and Congress wanting to seek action. Afterall, Congress is the only one that can start or end a war. But apparently Pres. Bush approved it, for whatever excuse he may have, WMDs or finishing his father's legacy, who knows what his intentions were for the approval of Congress war aggression. But all I can say is that when me and my Marines step foot 'in-country' (Iraq), we encountered many disturbing indications that he may had WMDs and hid them, he had all the time in the world to hide them. UN gave him a warning of 8-months advance. Many of the bunkers that the Amn Al Khass, Saddam's version of MI6 and CIA, gave me indications that he might had WMDs, but I am no expert of such details, I never seen a nuke or biological warhead behind confinement in some vault here the US, so therefore my judgement on what me and my Marines found in Iraq are uncomparably deemed illegitimate.

I am a Marine of 10-years and I do not agree on many issues that the President did about the outcome of this War in Iraq, I don't respect him as the President, but I give him the respect as our Commander-in-Chief.

You should never make a judgement on something as complex as the government sending the military into harm's way from "a book". You should develop an informed opinion from several sources.

I studied this stuff in college (B.A. in Political Science w/a concentration in International Studies and minor in Religious Studies w/a concentration in Islamic Studies) and it took me awhile to get enough info to make an informed opinion, taking in consideration that I already had a solid foundation of knowledge about the subject.

People who knew about Bush Jr. and the situation concerning Iraq made jokes about Bush Jr. getting put into the Presidency (he was put there by the Supreme Court...he wasn't elected), he'd go after Saddam in retaliation for allegedly trying to assassinate Bush Sr. in Kuwait in '93. Right after 9/11, those same people were saying that it didn't matter who was behind 9/11 because Bush Jr. would link it to Saddam any way he could, which is exactly what he did.

But don't just take my word for it. Use the internet and hear arguments from both sides. You can also go on sites like amazon.com to find books about the subject. You can also read periodicals/magazines such as The Economist that cover foreign affairs.

The more info you know, the more you'll understand the situation.
