Considering that none of the previous answers appear to have been from anybody who has actually been in Iraq - here is my answer (I am an Iraq veteran).

We were never there to 'install' democracy. Instead what we did was provide the Iraqi people to choose how they wished to be governed. They freely and in UN certified elections chose to implement a parliamentary democracy.

With that task successfully accomplished - we are not providing stability until the Iraqi government and people are able to defend themselves.

If you pay attention you would notice that the Iraqi people are being killed by terrorists. Do you really want to force the Iraqi people to abandon the form of government they chose and be ruled by people who send suicide bombers to bus stops and schools?

It is frightening that 'liberals' tend to support terrorists and not elected governments.

To enforce the 17 UN Resolutions that demanded Saddam Hussein keep his agreement after the Gulf War. We are still there because we cannot leave Iraq until the democratically elected government can defend itself.

Everyone who answered here should go back and read the
long but true facts from "just the". This is a well written and
studied answer which really and completely tells us why the
USA is in Iraq. This question should not come up again as
it has now been once and for all answered. Actually, I don't
think most of the answers has honestly come from soldiers
or veterans. My husband has served (in case you wondered),
and I'm proud of him. Terrorists are a real threat all over the
world now (Morocco, Algeria, Casablanca, North Africa,
Egypt and Sudan) and also the United States. This is a real
serious matter, so quit blaming Bush....he's trying to put out
the fire but needs more firemen.

To finish the job they were not allowed to finish the first time, removing Saddam and his lunatic sons from power (and the face of the earth).

Now we're just waiting for the Iraqi people to decide they've had enough of the nonsense and stop killing each other and allowing foreign instigators to destroy their country. When the Iraqi people stand up for themselves our troops will come home.

We are there as a deterrent for the insurgents trying to murder the innocent Iraqis until the Iraqi government can hold their own. The murders they are having now is nothing compared to the hundreds that would be killed if we weren't there.

Talk and diplomacy have there place but sooner or later you must realize that you are being played. Then it is time for action.

We have been at war with radical Islam since Iran took our embassy people hostage during the Carter administration. We chose to ignore this disease known as international terrorism for decades. We finally realized that we are at war after the attack on 9/11. The only reason it ended up in Iraq right now is Saddam overplayed his hand. He would still be in power if he had cooperated with the UN inspectors. He liked making everyone believe he had horrible weapons. After 9/11 we could not take the chance that he did and might provide the technology to terrorists. Since we were still at war with Iraq since Dessert Storm, we took the opportunity to take out his perceived threat.

The terror supporting countries in the region realize the threat to them that a Free Iraq would pose, have been supporting the insurgency with money and sophisticated weapons. The disease of fundamentalist Islam tyranny cannot abide the cure that liberty brings to the long suffering people of the Middle East.

You've been told a thousand times on here why we are in Iraq and it had not a damn thing to do with what God told us to do. Are you just incapable on understanding anything? Or are you hoping the 1001st time you will get it? We removed Saddam from power. The Iraqi's have set up their OWN democratic government with their own constitution and we are there insuring that they get the chance to survive before Iran ad Syria try to install their own radical Islamist Government.

Because we live in a time of a global market. Terrorism is just a counter act to Globalization. Extremists view western ideals as a threat to their way of life...why do they view it as a threat...because we force our culture on to others because we are incredibly ethnocentric, and we think what we are doing is 100% right. Plus if we can increase this type of culture world wide, we will create a larger need for all the materialistic crap that people in western society feel they need. I include myself in this mix as I sit on my *** drinking sprite, watching baseball, and thinking I have real problems, but really don't. With more demand, corporations and other entities must supply more of their crap which is good for them cause then they get to make more money, but it's not like any people really benefit from this other than the top executives at most companies, but our government will lead you to believe with our tax structure that this benefits the middle class as it is shrinking with the global market expanding. So then they recruit 18 year old kids to fight in our military to enforce our power, while telling them you are doing a good thing you're serving our country and our way of life, and everything America stands for. Without telling them that they are really just pawns of our economic system because dammit we have to win this war and make sure that there is some stability in the region so when we bring businesses over there they will be successful, so thanks for dodging bullets for the future of corporate America. It's not just Democrats or Republicans either everyone has their agenda as corporations control our politics anyway.

At this point we won the war; we won it when the government fell. However, we cannot pull out because of the instability. If we do pull-out it will force the Iraqi government to take control of their country but that's very optimistic and probably what wouldn't happen. The governments of neighboring countries wish to keep their culture and customs in-tact as much as some extreme religious groups are willing to die for it to make a point that they would like to keep their culture. We view it as wrong some of the aspects that take place in other cultures, but our culture has some faults too (Materialism).

Culture, Symbolism, and Tradition are about the three dumbest things I can think of as a human being that hold us back and lead us to destroy each other and the planet we live on. People are resistant to change because of these things, and thanks to fine advertising in our market we attach our lives to inanimate objects because of the symbolism or tradition that give us that oh so gooey feeling advertisers want us to have when they push stuff on to us.

I'm not defending terrorism here but if you want to understand it and what is going on, you must take a look at their prospective and try to walk in their shoes, remember most of these people are educated, they tend not to be common street thugs.

Violence is the worst way to solve things it proves nothing more than humans are incapable of coming out of prehistoric thinking of I'm bigger and stronger listen to me or I'll harm you. Should be used as a last resort as in WWII and it still could've been handled better.

To overthrow Saddam Hussein. Once the US Forces are there they must remain until a stable government is up and running.

That Iraq government has NEVER asked the US forces to leave.

The number one reason... I believe is bad intelligence that everyone wanted to believe.

The second reason is the Untied Nations is ineffective to do anything but give the world lip-service - and every country knows it.

The reason the US is still in Iraq?
A United Nations resolution that says we will stay until Iraq is stable enough or the Iraqi government asks us to leave.

Great solution would be to dump it the UN's lap but we would still be there as the UN won't do it without the US.

Why do you ask the soldiers and veterans? Ask the US senators and congressmen. Soldiers go where their government tells them to go. They fight whether the commander in chief is republican or democrat.

Why do you assume they know why they were sent?

Heck a lot of them are in the Guards, and signed up to defend our soil and help in emergencies.

It was a breach of contract to send them overseas.

The invasion was for 3 reasons: Bush wants to go down in history books as a "Great" president; Cheney wants Haliburton to rake in the big bucks, and give him some; Rumsfeld wanted permanent bases in the Middle East.

Those are the reasons. The poor souls sent for those reasons have no more insight into the situation than anyone else.

The US is in Iraq because our despot, I mean president, is not listening and has not listened to the American people. The American people are not interested in waging war....we have cable and other interesting things to do. We want the rest of you to quit screwing around and pay attention to the important issues....like your family, your health, and the environment.

As far as the military is concerned, we're in Iraq because the military was ordered there, pursuant to an Authorization for the Use of Military Force passed by Congress. The question stops there -- the military is in Iraq because they were ordered to deploy there.

Now, if your question is -- why did Bush order them to deploy to Iraq, and what does he hope to accomplish in a few months with 22,000 extra soldiers that he couldn't do in 4 years with 6 times that many -- that's a political question.

Its all about money...look how many troops are in Iraq compared to Afghanistan...truthfully...it is all about profit. What does Afghanistan have to offer us? Nothing about humanitarian needs (would have gone to the congo during that genocide if that was it). Not about retaliation (proved Bin Ladin was in Afghanistan, but gave up that search...but Iraq...oh the possibilities are endless. Corporations are salavating at the prospect of how much money they can make...and all you need to do is trace who will profit from that...I don't think you will be suprised.

The US invadsion of Iraq was based on lies. It was obvious to the rest of the world that the invasion was going to take place even before it happened. Bush just wanted to finish the job that his daddy started.

All the excuses just disguise the real reason; and that is to make a few men very rich. They don't care about the blood of young americans spilled in the desert.

It is not about terrorism or 9/11. There were no terrorists in Iraq before the war. The genearals essay stated in 1 response uses attacks by Iran on the us embassy as an excuse, what rubbish - Iran & Iraq are enemies. How can you blame Iraq for the actions of it's enemy.

It's a pity that many on this site can't see that they are being maniopulated by a few rich men. They are considered disposable. They are pawns in a game designed to make rich men richer
