Question for combat vets?

Ddn't join for the money, my friend! Come on now, when does military get good pay in the first place?

Obviously no one joins just because of money....that would be foolish and ignorant! Gomer Pyle-style!

If money is all you're worried about, don't join the military.

A note for Anne: The American Soldier, Sailor, Marine and Airman doesn't want or need pity. They serve because they want to, because they need to, or simply because "someone has to take the risk, so the rest can be free".

They are not mercenaries. They are citizens who put on that uniform for reasons far more important to them than money.

They don't have enough money for me to serve in combat. I would and did do it for my country.

When I was deployed I recieved the following pay in addition to my regular pay:
Family seperation allowance $250
Hardship duty pay $100
Hostile Fire Pay $150

I did a six month tour and made $3000 extra dollars, however, we spent $2000 in airfare and lodging for my husband and daughter to come see me while I was in combat training, and my husband went on a crazy $800 shopping spree at best buy cause he's bad with money. So really I only came up $200 ahead. Military members NEVER do it for the money, cause it's just not enough.

When I joined the Army I made less money per month than civilians did at minimum wage for an entire week......AND I was on call (working) 24 hrs 7 days a week.....while civilians were only required to work 8 hours per day on a 5 day week....
While I did get a small bonus for being in a combat zone......it equaled my jump pay which I lost when I deployed to combat.....so I actually was NOT making any extra money

Beyond all those facts.....how much money would you need to be paid to pick little pieces of red meat out of trees.....red meat that had been members of your platoon just seconds before.....carry your friend to a MedEvac chopper with his face blown off and watching two little red bubbles where his nose once was as he tried to breathe.....or visit you best friend in the hospital and try to not cry when you see what the fire did to his face.....the image still haunts me when I close my eyes

AND all the while know that anyone of them could have been YOU but for shear luck.....

Yeah.....I went to war twice for the money....

I feel sorry for the Americans who have answered. You guys get paid bugger all extra for the risks. Aussie diggers come back with around $85K for six month deployment (and still not enough for what may happen.)

I was happy with Three (3) hots and a cot...
now I find out we get paid too...

yeah but im a well driller both my tours i did nothing but drill wells and make a s load of per deim and resigned overseas that's a tax free bonus
