Question for life after the Air force Academy?

After you graduate from the Air Force Academy, I read on a website you have to serve 5 years of active duty and 3 years in the National Guard. Is this like going to war and everything as if your enlisted? Or not? Does this happen to everyone after they graduate from it? Or is it like a normal college, right after you graduate you get a job and live on?

You will be an Officer in the Air Force, subject to assignment anywhere in the world that they want to deploy you. Do you seriously believe that you, as an officer, will be exempt from similar assignments given to enlisteds?
If you do, my only hope is that you either do not gain admission to the Academy, or fail to earn a commission, because you seem to have the makings of one pi$$-poor officer.

At graduation you are commissioned and you head off to your first duty assignement. You belong to the AF 24x7 for the next 5 years. If they decide to send you to a great base.. super. If they decide to send you to a horrid base... oh, well. And, yes, you can and may deploy, depending upon manning and your career field. As an LT you are the bottom of the bucket and are walked on by everyone. Your job is to listen to the officers above you and the SNCO's below you.
Pro Academy: Great education at no cost, living stipend while attending, guaranteed job upon graduation, given the potential to become a great leader (whether you do or not is up to you!).
Con: 8 year obligation to the military, strict honor code, hard stance on discipline, tough to get in and stay in (the cream of the crop!), high expectations of grads, lots of rules and regs (face it... you belong to the AF starting the first day!). |
