Actually, When American use this term. It's meant for the French not the British. Your more than welcome to use the same phrase
in regards to the French. and also It sounds kind of cornie to say if it wasn't for America, British, Russia and what ever other countries that were on our side we'd all be talking German. That just don't sound right. It is just lacking something when you say it this way. Again, The Brit's are more than welcome to say the same thing. In fact, you guy's held up the German's long enough for the US. to help you out. No other country could do that. Now let's focus on keeping from talking Chinese or Arabic. I personally think the Brit's are a bunch of hard nose toughasses. That's why I like you all. Again, America is in a sense an extension of England. |

Americans just like to say that - most historians will tell you that the Americans had very little to do with defeating the Germans in WW2. I'm no expert on the subject, but it was mostly the Russians that beat the Germans. It was Russian tanks that rolled into Berlin, it was Russians that made the Nazi party sign the unconditional surrender and the Russians who lost more men than any other country during the war.
You don't often hear about it because of the taint of Stalinism.
So when an American says that, you can tell them "If it wasn't for you, we would still be living in a world in which no one had ever used a nuclear weapon against human beings". |

each has its advantages. If the Germans took over wed be able to drink beer in the street and stuff like that but wed have to learn to speak their language and forgo our sense of humour. If the Americans took over we get to keep guns for self-defence and dont have to learn another language but we put on 100lbs each and become very irritating. In both cases we have to start learning to drive on the right as well |

Jeez, what's with you Brits? You taught us to speak English, now you want us to learn to speak German. I've never heard the remark, "if it wasn't for us we'd all be talking German", used in reference to the British. I always thought that the Americans and British won the big war together, thank you. |

Of course the statement refers to Nazi Germany, and in context I don't think you wanted to be under the Nazi regime.
But if you'd like to speak German see "Rosetta Stone" language software they will help accommodate you. |

The UK has always back the US we did in Vietnam, Korea, Somalia and others they always come to us for backing. I never saw US troops walking the street in Ireland of helping out in the Falklands one of the reasons the helped in WW2 was the condition the they could use UK airbases after the war because at the time they didn't have any weapon that could reach the east. |

America doesn't want to take your independence.
But if you feel that becoming a German state is whats best for your country - then I suggest you actively work toward that goal.
Personally I think you would be better of being the 51st state. But whatever, this is all hypothetical nonsense. |

the reason Americans have no idea about the real world,
they forget the bits that don't suit them,
like how GB secured its future when we won the battle of Britain, you know before USA came into war,
our grandfathers fought for OUR freedom & won OUR freedom brave men every one god bless every one of them for giving us that freedom,
but they did help to save europe as did we but the rusians played the biggest part,
yes i would rather be speaking german than listen to yanks basterdising the english language,
also alot more good things came out of germany than have come out of usa,

If the Russians hadn't put up such a fight, Germany might have won. I guess Americans say they won it for us because they don't like to give credit to the Russians.
But then Hollywood reckons the Americans cracked the Enigma code as well, sheesh. Give it a few years they'll be printing that in the history books. |

It was really the Russian winters and the Red Army that knocked the sh1t out of the Germans. If American forces had not been in Europe to check Stalin's ambitions we might have been speaking Russian. |

Totally untrue re the 'talking German' comment! During WW2, when the Germans invaded European countries, they did _not_ insist that the occupied nations spoke or learned German. It's another one of those quaint American myths! Even more importantly (since they are referring to helping out in WW2), had the Americans hinted that they would intervene earlier in the war, instead of waiting 2 1/2 years, then Hitler (according to Albert Speer the industrialist in charge of German war production), would not have been so ambitious. Thus WW2 would have been considerably shortened.
As to which nation we might beneficially surrender our independence then I think I'd go for Germany... excellent transport, health and education systems, long cultural history, Anglo Saxon links, etc.. Most of my close relatives are American and they are not as contented with life as you might think - they worry about losing medical cover, endure ridiculously long working hours, have a mere two weeks vacation per year on average, fear being shot now that more states are allowing the carrying of concealed weapons, have an economy that is currently a bit flaky, and so on. So why go the American way?! |
