I think I am one of the most qualified to answer this question since I am a UK citizen but a perm resident of the US, my children are all US citizens with British Citizenship also
I love both countries so my view do not come from bias but persona observations.
The US freedoms are curtailed a lot more than in the UK, freedom is more of an expression than a state of being
In the US any police officer can stop me search my vehicle put me in handcuffs and jail me if I simply say "this is not fair". In the UK the police do not have that authority unless they can prove it is deemed necessary.
Public utilities operate in the US with very little regulation and are ultimately a law unto themselves
In the US it is possible to have your constitutional rights (civil liberties removed) In the UK they are enshrined
In the US you can be stripped of citizenship as it is seen as a privilege, In the Uk it is an indisputable right
The right to a lawyer in the US is not absolute (yes I do the Miranda) but if a judge decides you can afford a lawyer then their is no absolute right for you to be given a lawyer
In the US you can be jailed if you cannot prove who you are, In the UK there is no requirement to do so.
On any application in the US you 99 percent of the time have to list your SSN (social security number) wither it be for employment or credit, In the UK it is a criminal offence to ask for that information except for tax purposes ( e.g an employer)
IN the US counties, states can remove a persons driving licence for whatever reason they see fit, In the UK they cannot
In the US the sentence reflects the political climate an example being a young man in KY (Kentucky) who has been sentenced to 75 yrs imprisonment for the theft of a television because of previous convictions, In the Uk each crime has a sentence provision to stop "mob rule" mentality
In the US judges are elected because of their viewpoints and stances, In the UK they are appointed for their knowledge of law
In the US only a natural born citizen can become leader of the country, In the UK anyone can regardless of their country of origin.
In the UK we have a human rights act, In the US they do not. |

Laws between countries obviously differ. Some laws may appear "freer" to you, but they may not bother Americans much if at all. |

Puritan roots have to do with alcohol bans. Jaywalking is a safety issue. |

There are no states where alcohol is illegal.
The US, just like the UK, has a minimum age for the legal consumption of alcohol. Our minimum age is just three years higher, that's all.
I think someone's been pulling your leg, honestly. |

alcohol is not illegal in any US State.
Beer is not illegal in any US state.
But Britain does have police cameras on street corners watching everything you do.
Britain does archive every e-mail send by any one in Britain
If you call that free, your government watching everything you do and copying every E-mail you send.
Then you can have your type of freedom
I'll stick with ours. |

those are state laws and city laws not all of our states believe in those stupid laws and don't really do much to uphold them. |

The constituition was designed to give the states the majority of the power to govern themselves. that way the federal governemnt would not be as oppressive as it was in England.
How can you say you are more free when you cant even pick your nose without it being on camera. |

Your facts are wrong and America is a content not a country. US is a country.
I couldn't imagine how full our prisons and jails would be if you got sent there for jay walking. |

LMFAO!! Ronny J obviously has never done history... the US are basically the people that got kicked out of the UK... or "left" haha :-P
Also the the title of land of freedom and opportunity was more of an old thing, I mean there has to be laws introduced, like the UK to fit the people... or politicians, I mean the smoking in public areas in the UK is something to make it look like the UK politicians are looking good.
You have to remember, you can drive at the age of 16 and other things like that, getting a car is one of the most free things someone can do... |

It is more a set of ideals than it is reality!! |

There is a lot of hypocrisy and ridiculousness in the US when it comes to some laws (drinking, firearms, how to cross a street, et cetera), and Bush made many things even worse. Americans generally try to live up to an "ideal," but being human often fall short. So there's a human nature element in there whenever you think about how free Americans are and how much opportunity is available. But, for the most part, Americans themselves are very generous, down-to-earth, and probably still more "free" than people in most other countries. America is a nice place, but its leaders can still learn a lot from the UK, Canada, and other allies and friends... |

its the land of the free and oppertunity because poor refugees can come here and make a living for themeselves (unless thier illegals) without being oppressed, well by the goverment anyway. the only reasons we have these laws are because stupid christain families who cant protect their own children from drinking or guns. |
