Rather than "negotiate" with Somali Pirates why not just take the fight to them?

I seem to recall our Navy had a proud history of hunting down pirates and eliminating them. Why not set up some dummy cargo ships like was done in WWII as bait, when the Pirates get close simply one fire on them and accept no surrenders. Would be better than paying ransoms to these idiots after all.

Thomas Jefferson who was then President dealt with this problem over 200 years ago.

When the Barbary Pirates of North Africa attacked American Ships and demanded ransom and tribute from The United States of America, Thomas Jefferson sent the Marines to North Africa to kill the Barbary Pirates.

That ended the Piracy of the Barbary Pirates.

We need to follow Thomas Jefferson's lead.

Interestingly enough the Europeans wanted to pay tribute to the Pirates and negotiate with them rather than fight them.

We need to do the same with the Somali Pirates.

Currently, the pirates are holding hostages. The French just did a commando raid to take back a yacht and killed a hostage in the process. We want to avoid that.

I think you will see Q-ships and convoys in the near future. Raids against the Somali coastal cities where the pirates openly operate from is also a possibility. But do remember that this is a multinational problem, with multiple jurisdictions and navies involved. We need to act in a coordinated, decisive manner to eliminate this threat.

We ARE taking the fight to them. The USS Boxer, an amphibious assult ship, is on its way now. The Boxer was the flagship of the international anti-piracy task force 151 which prevented the hi-jacking on March 29th. The task force has been patrolling since January. It's a big ocean.
