Thanks all, for telling me about his refusal to accept release, which I didn't know : but why can't you just answer the question, without descending into apoplectic invective?
BY THE WAY, none of you seems aware that POWs of the North Vietnamese commies were well-treated, even pilots of bombers and strafers, who were guilty of indiscriminate murder of innocent civilians and who KNEW IT. Does that make them heros??????????

In a political move, the North Vietnamese offered to release him because he was the son of a Navy Admiral. He refused. He showed a hell of a lot more courage than a gutless liberal would ever show.

Gotta have more explosions!
Being held for as long as he was in such conditions is a sacrifice very few people in the world have given. When offered early release because of his family background, he refused it unless the other prisoners taken before him were released.

He volunteered for unpopular war, he went through a hell of a lot for his country, didn't sell out, did his time like a man.

Seems good enough for me. He had the opportunity to bail on his commitment like other sons of the elite but didn't. I'm not a big fan of the Republicans but I can respect him for his war record, unlike certain coke snorting drunkards hiding in some reservist unit.

I've also got 10,000 yen on him to be the next president of the USA.

Being shot down and made a PoW does not make him a hero.

Being shot down, made a PoW, and then REFUSING an offer to be released from the camp without the other PoWs makes him a hero.

Volunteering to fight, going in the mouth of hell, surviving severe brutality and torture for years, keeping his men going, refusing special treatment, never once giving in to the enemy and dedicating his life to serve his fellow Americans....

Yeah that would be called being a Hero.

ImMB
Imagine being in the situation he was in, being shot down, being a POW....and now look at him. He is running for President. Look at what he has done with his life and what he has done for his country.

because he endured what few of us could not even imagine, the term Hero has been used a little to much these days for people who simply perform there regular duties (teachers, sports figures etc) these people are not heroes, there is no sacrifice or possible sacrifice of one life for the defence of others. but enduring the horrors of an asian POW camp (make gitmo look like a day care center). or lossing a limb or ones life because your country ask you fight for what ever reason, is one form of hero for sure.

Surviving their brutal captivity makes all POWs heroes, and all those who serve heroes when they risk death, imprisonment, and torture in the service of their country.

Dustin
It wasn't being shot down. It wasn't being a POW. It was his conduct while being imprisoned that made him a hero.

John McCain nearly lost his life twice. The first time he narrowly escaped a burning plane during the fire onboard USS Forrestal. The second time he was shot down over North Vietnam.

He endured five years of harsh captivity, refusing an early release and staying until all the American POWs were released from the notorious Hanoi Hilton.

If that is not enough for you, what do you want? Rambo?

You know some of you kids need to watch your mouth I know you don't like this in person Wish you would and your were within reach

The way he handled himself in captivity and his behaviour when he returned to the US.

It is the duty of a captured officer to make good his escape.

the devil wears camo
clearly you have never served, clearly the thought of giving your life for others is just that,a thought, look past being shot down ,look past being a POW,look at the man as a member of the armed services who was prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice if called upon to do so and a man whose principles were way above the call of duty,a fighting man?,yes,a mans man?,yes,a hero, certainly,

?
I am no republican in fact I would be called a bleeding heart liberal

But John McCain IS a hero and a man entitled to the fullest of respect.

Unless you have served you should really shut the hell up

UK ActionMan
What about the breaking down in tears when he was caught and p!ssing in his pants heroics ..........?
Or the sitting in a pile of your own Turd for weeks on end heroics.......?

Northern Explorer
Good question...........they must have run out of prizes in the Cracker Jack that day so they gave out medals.
