Say I join a branch of the military with a 4 year active duty contract. Is it possible to serve 8 years of active duty and none of reserves or do you have to do at least 4 years of reserves?

As a former U.S. Army recruiter and a 13 year veteran, I can absolutely tell you that unless a "Stop-Loss" situation is in effect again, your original 8 year comitment may certainly be completed by serving all 8 years on active duty with no reserve requirement afterward. Although your original enlistment period might only be 4 years long, so you'll need to re-up to remain on active duty for the remaining 4 years to meet the 8 total. Normally, most initial enlistments are for six years or less & the remaining term of service is completed in the inactive reserve. Meaning you don't have to show up for monthly drills or two weeks of training during the summer, but you also won't be paid either.
I also happen to know of individuals who have been activated while serving their remaining time on the inactive reserve though. So there's no hard & fast rule that you'll "never" have to go back after exiting active duty. |

whatever amount of time you serve depends on the amount of time you are inactive. if you serve 8 you don't have to serve any inactive. it wouldnt be reserves that you would be in anyways if you did 4 and 4. its called inactive because you dont drill or report ever and you dont get paid, but if they call you back you must go back in |

You can serve your entire time active if you choose to do so. There is no requirement to do any reserve time if you serve at least eight years active. |
