Wow...really intelligent answers. Really justifies your country being a superpower. For a start the reason America are interested in what's happening in Georgia is there IS oil in that region and they'd need to run a pipeline through Georgia to get at it.

Really civilised talking about wiping out nations and innocent people. I don't think you realise what true horror is so I find it sickening the way you simply say people should be 'crushed' or 'nuked'. The unidentified "military means" could be nerve agents used on a large scale in major American cities. It is universal law that what pain is inflicted by people or a regime on others comes full circle in time.

It all goes back to the Russian decision to accept payment for oil in Euros instead of dollars. Once they did that their card was marked as far as the US was concerned. In fact most major recent political events can be explained by reference to the little reported battle between the Petrodollar and the rising PetroEuro.

Saddam Hussein announced his intentions to accept payment in Euros instead of Dollars and look what happened. Iran did so too, guess what, they are now in the "axis of evil". I wonder why?

Russian military might and sheer size means America can't take her on militarily so she does it politically by trying to isolate her. Unfortunately (for America), as you can now see with the Georgian incident, Russia won't be isolated. Who's that standing next to the Russian President? Oh it's Angela Merkel, German Chancellor (Petro Euro Alliance). Who's that with the Georgians? oh its Condoleezza Rice. Incidently Georgia has a pipeline ferrying Turkish Oil into the world markets. Turkey accepts payment in.. you've guessed it again.. petrodollars. What a surprise eh?

So you see America SHOULD be worried, not because Russia might use military might against the US... that would never happen... but because the US might have no choice but Hobson's choice: to use military might against Russia or lose her longest and most important battle since the end of the Vietnam war: The battle of the petrodollar.

America should be worried, Russia is a lose cannon, and America seems to be sensitive to it. I think for the best America needs to back of little - like Europe. Although if America did go to war with Russia, the states would probably win, as there a much more technologically advanced fighting machine. But if nukes were involved.....??

No. Considering the fact that we have nukes too, not to mention twice the population, ten times the economy, and a military that could put Russia's to shame. I'm not saying we should go to war of course, but we need to stand up to Russia before they think they can get away with bullying.

Nope america shouldnt be worried, the US has a much more advanced military than Russia.
America would need Natos backing first, and that would mean several countries against Russia.
Yes china is russias allied, and they have a crazy big military going on.
Georgia has become a threat to russia after it wanting to join Nato, and it has power over an oil pipeline that goes to the rest of europe.
All this is to do with is Russia wanting Georgia back, as it doesnt want a country that supports the US on its doorstep and a country that has good relations with them.

I doubt Russia will act militarily against US or NATO countries.
Not because they love peace, but at this point they know better than anyone they can't handle big enemies.
Small countries like Georgia may be, but nothing bigger than that for now. if they gain power and money and their course of actions won't change then it'll be much worse. I still doubt direct confrontation with US, but Afghanistan type stunts will be possible.

As for the Russian economy being up. yeah, right.
At this point they're enjoying high oil prices which mostly goes into the pockets of corrupt officials and maintaining aging military, sponsoring separatism in Georgia, Moldova, etc.

Add there Putins very communist approach to private business and you'll get the idea.

Latest stunts with Mechel would a good example. Putin personally caused Russian stock market crash twice this year. Eventually, even his puppet Medvedev came out and mumbled something about time to stop harassing businesses.
As far as I see Putin still can't accept that it's not Ok for government to confiscate successful companies left and right.

Let me get this straight, Poland installing missile defense systems is an aggressor towards Russia.
However, Russia invading sovereign country last week, with tanks, aviation and infantry, marauding and killing was not an aggressor, but liberator.

Remind me, how is it called what Ossetian president did 2 days ago, when he said Ossetins are finished leveling Georgian villages, looting and burning their houses and that Georgian refugees will never be allowed to return? All that with complete Russian support.
Is it called ethnic cleansing and banditry or that's "liberating" Ossetia in Russian style? Or may be it was "liberating" Georgians of their homes and possessions?

No. Russia is no longer a major threat. Our nuclear weapons and their nuclear weapons pretty much ensure that neither side will become overly aggressive towards the other. There may be minor skirmishes, but don't expect anything big.

Russia knows that with the fall of the USSR, that much of their power fell as well.

A large open conflict initiated by Russia is very unlikely. And for you America Bashers: America has nothing to gain from starting a war with a major nuclear power. So there is no need for your parrot noise 'war for oil'.

No. Russia did the unthinkable. They exposed the degraded state of their military capabilities during the Georgia invasion and let NATO know that they were a third world military. They cannot defend their Armor or their fleet. Their pilots are so inexperience they could not even fly below the minimum ceiling to prevent being shot down. Their troops are so green that they had a general bagged by a bunch of part timers. They have no drone capability at all and their tanks would have been considered out of place 30 years ago. They have no rolled bar armor and absolutely no defense against area armor denial systems, Hellfire missiles, or even ground launched man portable systems.

Russia's military is a joke and now the world knows it.

we shouldn't be overly worried, but our government officials should, as always, keep an an eye on them. They may have lost much of their power with the fall of the Soviet Union, and lagging far behind our military, but they are still the second most powerful military in the world. They could do significant damage to our allies in Eurasia, even if they couldn't attack us directly.

fact 1 - russia may or may not become the largest oil producer on the planet in thenext few years, but the US has the world's largest untapped oil reserves under the rocky mountains.

fact 2 - the russian economy is on the up but will not be the strongest "ecomony" in the next ten years. It simply has too much ground to cover.

fact 3 our economy isn't doing nearly as bad as you think, it is still growing. The growth may have slowed a bit, but it will increase.

fact 4 napolen hittler all made the mistake of thinking they could defeat russia with forces consisting mainly of ground troops with insufficient supply lines. We are sufficietly advanced and have good enough logistics to not need to prey on the countryside for materials. Russia can practice a scorched earth policy, but that won't do much against planes and ships, which will bring a constant supply of materials to our troops (Air and Sea dominance is a given).
