That's a philosophical question.
I believe that everyone can benefit from military service. Despite the training one can receive, the service does instill some core values that our country could use more of.
Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage aren't just words to memorize. They are ideals which we should strive for.
Being prior service now attending college full time, I am amazed at the complete lack of respect & personal responsibility of today's college students straight out of high school.
I'm sure there will be other opinions, and that's what makes the country (and the internet) great. We can agree to disagree. |

some nations, such as israel and switzerland have compulsory service, this leads to a highly trained civilian reservist population |

No. I like having an all volunteer military. The last thing that I would want if I were in a warzone would be fighting with a bunch of conscripts. I don't want to get fragged by some crazed America-hater that has been pressed into service. |

for all of you that said no make sure not to forget to register with selective service prior to turning 22 |

NO, the sheer amount of personnel entering the service each year would grind the system to a halt, then there is the cost of training all these un-needed individuals not to mention the attitude adjustment that most would need. Plus with the dropout rate, the people that really need the discipline and structure the military provides would not get it. |

sweedelj thats the dumbest answer on here. I could die before im 20 in a car accident, school shooting, or any other death that happens by chance. Just because youre in the military doesnt mean you will die before 20 or even raise the possibilty unless you are deployed |

Yes you should.
If you feel you are entitled to the rights, freedoms and joys that this country affords you, then you should also serve to protect that which you hold dear. Matters not if you believe in the cause, your service should be for the betterment of the country you reside in, and for the betterment of her citizens.
Yes, service should be mandatory. And if a person refuses service, that person should lose all rights that an American citizen is given. |

If they are physically able yes. It would get them a sense of adulthood. It would help keep the thugs off the streets and give them manors where few to none existed. |

Yes they should. It used to be that around 3/4ths of able body American men had service in the military. Our coutry was a lot more patriotic back then because more people had served it. Military service gives people a higher appreciation for their country. Now I'm not saying that they should have to serve in a combat role. There are plenty of noncombat roles in which people can serve. Also people can serve in the reserves or national guard if they want. There are also 3 nonmilitary uniformed services, whose names escape me, that people could go into instead of the military. I just believe all able bodied Americans should preform some kind of service to their country for at least 2 years. |

I used to think that...but not anymore. I've supervised a crackbaby, worked with a guy that had a nervous disorder and roomed with a girl that turned out to be a career thief. Its costs hella bucks to
1) Recruit
2) Medically screen/treat (from MEPS to first base)
3) Train (basic and tech school)
4) Outfit (clothing and equipment)
5) transport (to basic, to tech school, to their first base)
Taking care of these people took me away from my job and other people who really needed my attention.
It also costs money to put them out...they still get a separation physical, transportation to home of record, etc.
So no, I think everybody should serve their country but not necessarily in the military. |

No. This country spends more money on the military than any country in the world by a mile. Maybe we should quit sticking our nose into every situation. Or better yet - maybe we could try something unique - like diplomacy and quit relying on brute force to solve our problems. If you think everyone should contribute something to their country....why not have everyone help tutor children or help build something useful? |

its a nice thought, but not everyone can handle it.

No. Waste of money, waste of effort, waste of time.
People who want to go to the military, can. People who want to go to college or work, can.
Fine the way it is now. |

Hell no. The military is definitely not for everyone, it would just be a burden on the military and taxpayers. |

No. Conscription and freedom are mutually exclusive, and ever since the end of World War II, our military has only been used to advance our government's agendas to our detriment instead of defending our shores and protecting our liberty. |
