Should I enlist in the marines or become an officer?

If you are in High School I recommend you look for a local ROTC program, I wouldn't post pone college for joining the Marines just yet and if you join the Marines after college you can still be enlisted and just go in with a higher pay grade. Ask yourself why you really want to be a Marine and a sniper and try to find current Marines or Veterans in your area that can talk to you about what it is really like to be a Marine. My husband was in the Navy attached to the Marines for most of his enlistment and some of the best people I've ever meet are Marines so HOORAH to you but do your homework first. Like you said you have a couple of years. Caution! try not to get advice from a recruiter, it will be bias (they have to meet quota) so again talk to people currently in or former military. If you become an officer you will really enjoy your military career no matter what branch you join. If you want to lead troops become a commander. There is less bull crap to deal with and you will have a lot more respect if I could have been able to join as a Commander I would have and most likely would have signed up for even longer. But if you insist on being a sniper as a marine go for it. But be very prepared to deal with a lot of bull crap and have more disrespecting people around you.

Good for you for considering joining the Marines. You still have approximately two years to decide on it so do your homework now. If you want to become a sniper, then go for it. The enlisted pay is adequate but not nearly enough for that particular job - as it a highly specialized job with intense training and heavy responsibilities.

If you prefer to become an officer, you'll need at least a B.S./B.A. degree from an accredited college; if you enter with a Masters degree, the entry rules are slightly different. If you earn an engineering degree, try to avoid wasting it as an enlisted troop; you may as well use it as an officer - but remember, the Marines may/may not place you in your field of study - they will place you where the Marines need you.

Regardless of which career you enter, enlisted or officer, it's a noble decision and I wish you well in your choice.
