I'm going to go into the Army, more than likely. If not, the Air Force, and I want a tribal sleeve tattoo. Would I have to jump through less hoops if I got my tattoo before or after I joined?

most you could do in the air force is a half sleeve, and now you are not allowed to come in the military with any tattoos on your saluting arm. As far as when to get it, when ever you feel like it but make sure its healed completely before basic. GL. |

After, definately. They will tell you what you can get after you join. But, don't plan on getting a full length sleeve tattoo, I'm pretty sure those are against regulations. |

After. Definitely after. My friend just joined the Navy and has a few tattoos so you CAN join with some, but he has a nice large one on his shoulder down just short of the elbow. If his tattoo, or any one that you plan on getting is to the elbow or below, you can NOT join, they will not let you. I'd imagine it has something to do with it showing under from some of the different uniforms they have.
But the simple answer to your question is to get it after you LEAVE the military, you can not have it at anytime while in the service. Regardless of if you get it even after you join.
If you have any questions and want the "best answer" stop by a recruiter and ask them point blank, you shouldn't have to sign any papers or anything if you don't want them to contact you later. |

This was a while ago, but I remember a kid getting **** in BCT because he had a sleeve tattoo. They aren't overly fond of tattoos that can't be easily covered up in uniform. |

well the tattoo sounds lame. but my husband who has been in both the air force and army says you cant get one to soon to the day you leave, pretty much after you tell them what tattoos you have dont get anymore. if you wait until after, you have to wait until after bmt. sometimes even after your tech school. |
