Should I join the Marine Corps or Coast Guard?

when you say, end of school years, i hope you mean college, because if you don't have a degree they are not going to put into one of those flying craft, unless something stupendous happens. the coast guard is a good choice, if you have an interest in the sea and law enforcement, if you go into law enforcement later it will definitely further your career, so will the corp, but you will have that sailing aspect down.

As I ask many young men, that are thinking of going in:

Do you plan to retire through the service?

If not what do you want to do when you get out?
- Which branch do you think will help you learn the skills you need for a career outside of the serive?

It may sound corny now(at your age) but honestly draw up a five year plan and a ten year one. Focus some of your decision on that. Not what branch your friends think would be cool or not.

MOM KNOWS EVERYTHING

The Coast Guard is great. You could become a helicopter pilot in that branch of the service, and they are not quite as "Military" as the marines. They also have some jets nowadays. Search and rescue is a very exciting specialty---my husband was a helicopter crewman in the Coast Guard many years ago. He loved it. (You'll need a college education or officer's candidate school to be a pilot in any branch of the service, I believe.)

You probably wouldn't even exist, everything would of changed, first of all, we would be speaking GERMAN! Second of all, we wouldn't be the most powerful country right now, so you should thank our Military for giving you the right to speak and to say bull$hit like that, and Thank them for making this the best country in the world.

Tell me how many casualties we had in WW2, we lost a lot, but that's war, FREEDOM DOES NOT COME FOR FREE!

Anyways, join the Marines and go out there and serve your country and really MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

If you think that people in the military don't make a difference, you are a very uninformed person.

I guess winning WW I, WW II and the Gulf War I didn't make a difference in the world. And the people that fought in Korea and Vietnam didn't make a difference.

Remember, some of our presidents and VP's have served in the military: George Washington, U.S. Grant, Teddy Roosevelt, JFK, Ronald Reagan, Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, George H. W. Bush as well as many of those who have been Senators and Representatives.

Now, as far as which branch: you have to decide for yourself. As far as law enforcement, you can do that in any branch. And as far as search and rescue, the USAF has some of the best training and operations in the world.

Do some research and decide what it is you want to do first.

Talk to a recruiter from each service. Maybe even do a search on the internet and find a military unit website. Usually you can contact the commander of the unit. Ask him if you can talk to a member of his unit about what their job is really like.

You can't compare the two. You can't even compare the Navy to the Coast Guard unless the Coast Guard is called up to serve under the Navy.

I love that everyone has a perception that military members are uneducated. It's ridiculous and untrue.

I would advise everyone who is considering joining the military to go join ROTC or go to college first. Military officers make so much more money than enlisted and they have such better career opportunities.

I do agree, marines tend to do the dirty work and coast guardies tend to do the good stuff. Depends on what you want.

My husband is in the Marine Corps and he says that boot camp is really hard, but once you complete this boot camp you can reenlist into any other branch and become an officer as soon as you enlist.

As far as you flying fighter jets, you need to become an officer first. Before you fly a Blackhawk you will also need to become a commisioned or warrant officer.

My vote is Marines, then. Marines are part of the Department of the Navy and you will enjoy the best of both worlds.

I am also with Tara. I was Army. Boats make me sick and the ocean is always cold and freezing.

if you just want education for future use, join the air force, you'll live longer LOL. If you want to be a pilot, go to college first, only officers see the inside of a Harrier. (although I believe Warrant Officers can fly choppers)

neither, you'll get killed in either one, and i'm sick of seeing the young dead people on the news every night. if you want to get into law enforcement, become a police officer, or better yet, go to college, get educated and make a difference in the world.
