Should I join the military?

I am 18 years old and I have less then 30 days of high school left. I got accepted to the University of Central Florida and it looks like I'll be attending there. But i don't want to go. My parents, especially my dad, always thought that I couldn't become anything unless I went to college and got a job. I brought a navy recruiter to my home and my dad wouldn't hear anything but how I could get my college payed for. As far as they know i'm going to college but I really want to go into the Navy. I've wanted to become a navy diver for about 2 years now ( I call the recruiter in my sophomore year).

My question is should I still go to college or should I just join anyways? The only thing stopping me is my parents.

I don't want to join any ROTC program because I don't want to be an officer. I'm not doing it for the pay. I've already turned down the Army ROTC and rejected the NROTC because I have my schooling payed for already.

Becoming a navy diver is what I've wanted to do for years now and I can't get over the fact that I'm letting my parents get in the way of that. There isn't much they can do to stop me I just don't want that conflict between us.

My dad gave up his dreams in the Army of becoming a Airborne soldier for money for college and ended up never needing his degree. I think that's why he is so negative about it. I definitely don't want to regret my decision.

Do what is right for Tommy Fox. But I have to admit, I wish that I had an education to fall back on after I could no longer serve. It is great and very fulfilling, but I regret not having gone to college. (I have since gone to college, and it does help you get jobs...)

the only thing thats stopping you is yourself, not your parents

you're 18 years old, this is your decision. in the end, the only person you can make happy is yourself. do what you feel is best for you, not your parents.

the only thing you'll regret is not doing what you really want to do

good luck

Don't let your parents decide for you. the military is a great career. BUT, if you go to college and get a degree, you can go in the military afterwards and make bank money as soon as you come in because of your college degree. it's up to you bro, but don't let your parents decide. Its your life, your 18 now.

Thrust Of Just
Do what you want, you're an adult now.

For starters, college is extremely over-rated unless you're going for a specific degree in a specific jobfield that you're motivated to do as a long-term career.
Secondly, your head obviously wouldn't be in college and that's nothing to be ashamed of. College straight out of HS doesn't leave much room for expanding your view of the world and getting real life experience.
Thirdly, I think your dad is just jaded not because he doesn't value his degree but because he was in the Army. Whatever you do, don't join the Army. USN/USAF/USMC are all good to go... just not the Army. ;)
