Should NATO and UN warships that capture Somali pirates release them?

NATO ships recently captured a skiff with Somali pirates who attacked a Norwegian tanker. The Canadian ship that captured the pirates had to let them go because Canadian law doesn't allow persecution unless Canadian citizens were involved.

What good is NATO if they can't persecute or even detain the pirates?

I could only favor this "catch and release" process if the pirates were released and their boat remained confiscated. The old pirate term for this was "walk the plank". The pirates would be free to SWIM back to shore.

They should be held for ransom. As soon as someone comes up with several million for each of them, they should be released. Until then, they should be held in solitary confinement and fed bread and water.

By the way, how has the world exploited Somalia?
For as long as I can remember we have been giving aid to them. What have they ever given the world other than AIDS?

Each Samali woman has an average of 6.52 children. No wonder they can't feed themselves!

They shouldn't even bother to catch them. Sink them in place. I bet that would eventually stop piracy!

I agree, the catch and release is totally BS. Next thing you hear they'll be getting caught so the NATO ships doctor can tend to the VD they all give each other.

I thought we used to hang pirates. The capturing Captain would simply "hang them from the yardarm."
We should maybe go back to that system for a while.

I think they should be detained for a while, maybe server a prison sentence for theft, and/or any other crimes they may have committed like for violence or threatening.

"Walk the plank" or a bullet through the head would work. The Plank would be less messy and save the cost of a bullet.

I hope they know they put the lives of innocents at risk becaus they wouldn't do anything to the bad guys.

Blow a few out of the water along with the mother ships, and it would stop pretty quickly. As it is now, what's the risk for them?

The somalis are fighting back. All the world, ALL THE WORLD, was exploiting them, treating them like pigs, subhumans, playing games with their politics, making wars and killings and starvations with absolute indifference to their humanity. Now they are returning the favor. It's payback time baby!
