Should i join the army?...need advice?

i am 21 and have a desire to join but i think about my friends and family and they would all miss me! ...but i am currently unemployed and not in school and don't have a g/f and basically don't do much with my life (i do work, but i just quit my job) and was wondering if this seems like a right path for me to take and wondering if you were in my shoes would you join the army?

1-800-USA-NAVY. Give them a call first. Same benefits. More opportunity to take college (yes you can take courses while at sea on a ship). You get training to help you get real job once you get out. You get a job guarantee before you sign your contract. Your only limiter is...you. But, you have to know what you want, do your research and see who can help you get that. Don't sign because of money. Remember, if it were really a "bonus" why would everyone be eligible for it?

The Navy also offers a 2 yr program, and there isn't an Infantry. In fact you have to score higher on the ASVAB to qualify for the shorter contract. Don't get fooled by the G.I. Bill, that doesn't belong to any branch. (I know Army Recruiters that call it the Army G.I. Bill.) It is not governed or controlled by any single branch.

seacoral28
You are 21, you have your whole life in front of you. sit down and weigh out your options. If your going to joing the military, reguardless the branch there is alot that goes into it,
you have to want to do it. If you go in, you need to give it your best shot and do your best at whatever it is.
Or you wont make it through boot camp. WHEN you make it through boot camp, things will be alot better and you can start working yourself up through the ranks. You dont want to be the pain in the *** soldier everyone dreads, you want to be the solidier everyone begs to get into the unit or platoon.

In the past before my husband I dated AF, USMC and now im an ARMY wife.
People can sit there and put down one MIL branch for another.
thats kinda how it goes, Kinda like rivals,
but really No matter what branch you are in your still serving the same country and may have the opposit branch one day in battle with you some how.
No one is better than the other to a degree, they all just serve a different purpose.
Yes AF has better chow, and housing no doubt.
Marines are perhaps a closer nit "brother aka Dawg" group but the army has its things too, there are good and bad about all of them.
For you deciding what branch, go talk to recruters for all of the branches and see what spikes your interest the most. if you like living by the water, the navy or USMC will move you closer to those type of places, if you like more inland youd want AF or ARMY.
Nothing says you have to sighn up the day you talk to a recruter.
I think youd be proud to make it through boot camp and I know your family would be proud too.
Sure you family will miss you and you will miss your family but the soldiers you work with become your family too.

Listen ,My husband is In Iraq as we speak and has been in several firefights. Just had a recent casuality.
There is always that chance youll die, or like in a car as the gal above stated.
much of your survival will depend on how well you do, pay attention and take it serious.
No matter what branch there are people deployed in EVERY branch right now.
Yes if you join the ARMY you most likley will be heading over there to Iraq aka hell hole aka sandbox shortly, and deployments in the army are 15 months as of now, that could always change.
In any branch you get to travel and go do things, and see things youd never see. One guy who wrote to you about that is very very correct. We have been, (well my hubby ) ALL over the world.
Some people may dissagree with me, but thats ok im just trying to tell you my mutual opion about everything.
You are the only one who can make the best from eveything.
Opinions are like A** Holes everyone has one.
everyones personality depends on there opnion what one person thinks might be crappy another might love it.
So do what you , and only you want to do, and yes be sure to read the contract carefully
hope I hellped good luck.
:)

if i was in ur shoes, i would join the coast gaurd, its not as hardcore as the army and the educational benifits are really good.

Joining wouldnt be a bad idea but dont do it because you feel that you cant do anything else. Explore all of your options and make an educated decision.

Are there any community colleges around that you can take classes at?

Start looking for jobs and climbing the company ladder.

eve
I would suggest you join the airforce or the navy. everyone I know in the army is in iraq and wishes they never joined.

kejjer
Well --Yes,

The army --or any military branch will give you a job,--you'll meet a lot of good people_ (SOME NOT SO GOOD) and you'll travel.

Of course there is a war going on--so you could be killed --but that could happen the next time you get in your car too.

I joined the army when I was twenty one--served four years--got out and used the GI bill to get a college degree and some of the best times I had were in the Army--
I traveled around the world, got a few medals from fighting in a war and had an overall good time--looking back on it. While I was in, I did not think too much about it. But I have been places and seen things that most people will only read about in history books or the Newspapers.

I would suggest---If you have no direction, the military is a great place to decide what you want to do with yourself.
But--if your going to college later on---get the College fund and sign up for the shortest amount of time. College is hard after you have been out of school for a long time. Especially Calculus.

I'd try the Air Force or Navy first. The Airforce has the best Jobs for the Civilian world and the best chow.

Eventually you will need to work in the civilian world so try to get some job that is going to add to your experience towards that field. Unless you are going to college afterwards.

The army offers a TWO YEAR enlistment--with the GI BILL, but you'll probably be infantry for those two years.--That only translates to law enforcement.--And you'll still have to go through the academy anyway. But then again--you may decide you like it and stay in.

aviation_girl@sbcglobal.net
I would get some major advice before doing so.
The Army is some serious stuff and yes..your family and friends would miss you.
It is such a high honor to be able to serve your country...you just have to ask yourself if you are ready and able to accept such a duty.

Jerkwithhotsauce
You can join if you want. Read your enlistment papers VERY carefully. Get a lawyer and have them read every last detail of your papers. DO NOT sign unless you agree to every last detail.

From,

A good Army friend.

Do whatever you feel like
BUT
do not join the infantry! Combat engineers are even worse! Supply? Logistics?

TedEx
You are 21 and it's way past the time when you are going to have to do your own thinking and learn to make a committment.
You seem to be concerned about your friends and family missing you? Are you going to let them think for you???
You are unemployed and not in school. So, tell me, what do you want to do with yoruself? Are you strong enough to make a committment, and have the balls to stand by your committment. You
won't wimp out out when things get al little rough??? If you can do this, , you NEED the Army, more than ever.

man I'm going to tell you what i tell my friends. It doesn't matter where you go, either to school or the army. If your going to go an just waist your time then why bother. In my case I'm going to school and am going to use any money i get from school to start a store.

halfzeimer
I can't say it would be the worst thing you could do. Get a little education, discipline and moxie into your life. If there isn't anything else going on, why not?

stinky7
if u have the desire i say go for it... i actually was considering it too but im going to school and my friend is in the army and he told me that im too smart for it and its not the route for me although he enjoys it because of his passion for it. but it would be a great experience for u if u do go.. and itll get you a head start and get you somewhere quick, and the bonus is a good plus... at first its hard being away from family and friends but once u get through that ull be fine. hope this helps

cale
Marine Corps. The Army doesn't have very good benefits. And, they're very trashy. The Marines are more strict, organized, and not gay.

Ron da Don
The military might just be the best thing for you right now. Of course your friends and family will miss you, but that's a good thing - and you'll earn a new respect from them. Plus, you get 30 days leave per year, so you'll have time to visit if you want. Life gets boring just hangin' out in your home town, doing the same ol' thing. Our country needs more good people to serve. If you truly have the desire, then go see a recruiter. Tell the Army recruiter you're thinking about the Navy or Marines, and then ask for a signing bonus. And while you're in basic training, keep your head down, mouth shut, and your ears open. Good luck to you!

jrod
im currently a 15 yr old guy who really wants to join da army cus a) cant find a job more excitin b) wanna be the voice for the people who dont have one c) rather die fightin for wat i believe in rather then in a rocking chair at age 80. so i guess if u also feel like that, then join

Zeeky
I think that's a very hard decision that only you can make.

Ed A
Of course they'll mis you - can you blame them? :-)
I regret not doing the same thing.

You have no ties that bind you.

They have the entire world, excellent training (go technical!), fantastic benefits that last your lifetime if you stay the course.

And all will be better off...

Join up, doesn't sound like you have any reason not to. Of course, I'd say join the USMC instead though.

USMC!!!
THE FEW, THE PROUD, THE MARINE!!
the advice i got for you is:
since you don't have anything holding you back, go for it... but go see what marine recruiters have to offer you that the army doesn't!!! if your gonna join, why not be the best!!!
go for it...
hope i helped

Douglas S
well, you need to get over people missing you. no offense. since your 21 i recommend that you go officer since you would be an old enlisted. Think about it this way, You have close to 100 years to live, that is aLOT of time. why not go to the military for a little while so you will experience something that few do? havent you ever wanted to be that grandpa that has all of those stories for his grandkids?
P.S. Army is kinda gay these days, for the common man. You've got incentive, join USMC. They kick *** and take names. Their the largest elite service branch in the world too. and they don't take it in the ***.

if your a beliver, pray about it.

if not, seriously talk about it with your family. but remember, in the end, its all about you.

Barbara
Get a life, and keep it.

It sounds like you do need some direction, and the military might help you get focused, learn discipline, and train your for something you can use later.

You did not mention an urge to fight. You might consider joining the Coast Guard or another branch that allows you to serve your country, but that will not put you in Iraq.

Good luck.

RE
No. Listen to Bill and read articles like this one:
http://www.abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=4161251

Some people might tell you it will make a man of you, but it is just as likely to break your spirit.

Coast Guard might be okay.

?
hmm get a job and gta gf study n dnt go
