Should immigrants to the US be required to serve in the military to obtain their citizenship?

There's already quite a few immigrants that serve in the military, and end up obtaining their citizenship that way, so I think it's a good idea. I also think all people at 18 should serve, immigrant or not. And I think everyone should serve at least 4 years.

In the old days, Roman Citizenship was obtained by serving in the military. It is not an absurd proposition.

That's about the most foolish thing I've ever heard. SO our military would be made up of non-citizens?? Why would we trust them to protect the rest of us??

I think it would be a novel idea. 2 years service in addition to having to pass the tests would at least give the immigrants a better appreciation of the benefits they receive as citizens. Of course, I would be open to a 2 year mandatory service for our citizens as well, since they seem to appreciate their rights less than most immigrants.

NO.
Noone should be forced to serve. Military service should be on a strictly volunteer basis. Any person, citizen or otherwise, who is required to serve will most likely do so grudgingly, not an attitude I desire in an individual I'm paying to protect my home and family.
On the other hand, immigrants with a desire to serve should be allowed automatic citizenship after 2 to 4 years of honorable service.

sure why not.. like you said it would show that they are willing to serve their country rather than going on marchs because they want drivers license even when they arent legal citizens..
ive thought about this idea too.. maybe if they have to join the military then less and less people will migrate here.. but the thing is like the normal problem with illegal immigrants is you have to find them first.. not all of them apply for citizenship so how exactly would you go about enlisting them
oh and they should serve the same amount of time that any other person that enlists does.. not just a year or two.. that would be way to easy in my opinion.. everyone would join if they could leave after a year

yes, I think it would show their commitment to making the US their home country. BUT it just would not happen, the libs and anti-military folk would be all over it as unfair. Those who did not meet the physical qualifications for military service, could serve in a government (state or federal) temp job, that had a predetermined length of service.

You don't even have to be an immigrant to serve in our military. Anyone willing (provided they pass a background security check) can serve in our military. They're only allowed to do certain jobs though...usually ones that don't involve a security clearance.

Legal immigrants serve in our military now. It's one of the few shortcuts an immigrant can take on the path to citizenship. I've worked with quite a few of them back when I served. My understanding was that they served for the standard six years (enlisted) contract.

I have to different feelings on this subject. In someways I agree with the first girl on here but in other way's I think they should have to serve. If they really want to come here and make a better life for them self's then they shouldn't have a problem fighting for the country that they want to be a part of. My Great Great Grandfather's were very proud to fight for this country! I think they should have to serve the same amount of time as anyone else that sign's up 4 years for some branches and 2 for others.

this would clear up the health problems brought on by unscreened illegals as well

yep and we should start with you (you're definitely not a native american and thus you are by extension an immigrant and most likely voted for bush)

One, not all would-be immigrants are male and fit to serve.

Two, the Roman Empire used a lot of foreign troops in their legions. Do we really want to follow their every footstep?
