No. But some service should be.
I was in the military and that was the right choice for me. it is not the right choice for everyone.
However, there are many other ways that people (including disabled people) can be of service to the country. |

I wouldn't want anyone in the military that doesn't want to be there. I don't want to spend my time dealing with people who don't want to be there and giving me headaches everyday when I can have soldiers who want to be there.
Not everyone is military material. It really isn't for everyone and no need to waste time on people who can't cut it.
As far as financial aid and all well I guess sss.gov has that covered.
I feel they can run for public office but don't think they should be allowed to run for president. You need to lead from the front not the rear. |

It would be incredibly expensive to support and waste the time of that many soldiers.... a militiary that large would be pointless and most of the time would be spent disciplining or keeping busy those that don't want to be there. |

Compulsory military? Having served in the Anbar Province Iraq in 2004 with 1stMARDIV, 2nd Bn, 7th Marines, 3rd Plt Echo Company I'd rather have only those who truly "desire" to support and defend the constitution of the United States. Sounds corny? Not really. The rubber meets the road when you're in combat. Do you want someone who was forced to join the military watching your six? (Basically watching your back. A true team player.) Nope. Not me. I've heard people say "I didn't join the military to go to war! I joined for the benefits!" My thoughts to those type of people? Get your benefits from some other organization. My thoughts.

no, it would weaken our armed services and increase deaths |

The military isn't for everyone. It wouldn't be fair to obligate those that do not wish to be in the military to serve, unless it was a national emergency.
Maybe if there were more paid alternatives to the military in a national service scheme - perhaps in the emergency services, merchant marine and agricultural labor in addition to the military.
In the meantime, conscription just isn't feasible. There are manpower issues, but we neither need nor are prepared to pay for a significantly larger conscript army. |

I dont think it should be mandatory. Military isn't for everyone. It really takes a strong minded individual for that type of work. (My husband is in the navy and he is a very level-headed person) I on the other hand, I am always anxious, stressed and waaaayy to sensitive. So why would the military even want me to serve this country in that form. I will stick to being the nurse I am, that cares for the veterans. |

I think that it shold me manditory for presidentail canidates only. It just doesnt seem right for someone who has no military experience to be the "commander in chief"
They got no idea what its like for the troops, yet the president alone decides thier fate... messed up if you ask me.
(give me thumbs up if you agree, thumbs down if you disagree)
VERY good point Brian, i hadnt thought of it that way... |

I would say no. But if someone somewhere decides to restart the draft, I would rather have compulsary service than that. It sounds the same but with the draft it's too random. Compulsary service gets everyone to the door and then we can weed out those who can't hang. |

No, alot of people are not cut out for it, at all. |

Absolutely. Military service is a great social equalizer (to an extent), and an obligation that should fall to the entire population rather than be a burden on the socially disadvantaged or a safety net for the criminal element.
Also, certain European countries have excellent public service programs that can substitute for military service if an individual is a "pacifist"/conscientious objector |

No, military service should not be mandatory. It should be up to the individual to serving in the military.
As for serving America in other ways, besides the military, in order to receive federal aid for school, or be able to run for public office, I am all for that. There are numerous oppurtunities to serve their community, state, or the federal system without serving in the military.

Military service should not be mandatory. This country was founded on fighting for causes you believe in. With the current military setup, that mostly happens except for the ignorant people who join just because they think it's "cool" and then end up getting shot up. |

It sounds like a good idea, especially if you want goverment money like loans and even some social services. I think though our constitution would forbid it under involuntary servitude - not sure though because they would be paid.
