Should openly gay people be allowed to serve in the military?

Personally, I think states and armies are a thing of the past, but I always thought it was kinda lame how being gay was grounds for dismissal in the army.
If you believe that gay people should not be allowed to serve, please explain your reasoning.

I'll state it like Ron Paul.
So long as gay people's behavoir is not disruptive to others, it's fine.
So long as straight people's behavior is not disruptive to others, it's fine. |

i think the military is the only place where political correctness has no place. If not knowing that someone is gay will help some ignorant redneck fight with a clear head, im all for it. Dont ask, dont tell is fine by me |

I see no problem with them serving at all...............I knew plenty of gays folks when I was in the Army |

Many of the people arguing against seem to be doing so on the basis of other soldiers' attitudes to gays. Fifty years ago, similar arguments were used to justify racial segregation in the army, and were just as ill-founded.
As for whether gay people can be good soldiers, Alexander the Great seemed to do all right... |

They have served proudly and well in the armed forces since before we were a country. It's time that they can do so openly. |

I knew a gay crossdresser who carried a .45 in 'her' purse and was a heck of a shot. 'She' could be my wing... um... person, any day! |

Overtly gay Lance-Corporal in my Regiment. Occasionally we'll have a laugh about him, but otherwise it's not a problem in the least.
What, do people think gay people are more likely to flirt than straight people? I certainly haven't seen only one case of male soldiers flirting with female soldiers, and vice versa. |

i believe that you are who you are..its not a choice...believing this and having an active duty husband who has been taught to believe basically that gay people are to be looked down on..how else would you explain the current policy...i think that in order to have a large fighting force you make rules you live by those rules..those rules keep my husband alive when he is in a warzone..if that means no gays openly outed and in a uniform so be it...but i still think you cant change who you are.. |

The armed forces have always been a testing site for social changes. I can give you some examples. Women were allowed in to the US military in 1917 as nurses and some enlisted rates (Yeoman). Of course we have examples of women working hand in hand before that (Molly Pitcher, Clara Barton, etc) but this was 1st time they were allowed to enlist in a government versus a militia role. The women were accepted in to a separate group within the military for many services (WAVES, WAM, WAF) they were segregated from the regular military. The US Navy was the first to allow women in to the regular navy in 1948 and lastly the Air Force disbanded the WAF's in 1976. They still are excluded from some MOS's to this day. So this means that for women to go from segregated to mainstream.took 30 to 60 years.
Next let us look at African Americans. African Americans served in the Revolutionary War from states such as Massasuchetts and Rhode Island. During the Civil War African American battalions were formed in 1863, like depicted in the movie "Glory". They were segregated from the rest of the army. Of course after the war the 9th and 10 cavalry was formed i.e. Buffalo soldiers. The military was finally desegrgrated in 1948, allowing African Americans to serve in the regular military. So 1863 to 1948 is around 85 years. Gays could serve in the military, but would we need to segregate them or has the Military come to the point that they would not need to segregate? The Military would have to overcome barriers such as religious beliefs and bigotry to allow it. We still have these problems concerning women and African Americans within the present US Miltary. Education only takes you so far, you have to change beliefs in order to go further. |

No, as others have stated, would they shower with the women? bunk with them? I think they would get hurt if others new about it. Hense dont ask, dont tell. And I dont agree with that either. but its better than nothing for the gays. |

NO, How do you do that? So you have an openly gay male, does he get his own private shower? his own room? Or does he bunk with the women? Sorry it just doesn't work. Besides that openly gay would cause nothing but friction within the ranks. If It wasn't late i could go deeper into this but I'm tired, Good night. |

effeminate gay men can serve in combat support with the women. this way everybody lives.
ironically one of the greatest warriors and leaders the world has ever known, was an effeminate gay named Alexander the Great. |
