Should people joining the Armed forces sign an MOU (Memo of Understanding)?
Find answers to your legal question.

Should people joining the Armed forces sign an MOU (Memo of Understanding)?

Before people join up to go to Iraq, do you think they should sign an agreement that explains exactly what they will be getting into? For example:

1. you are aware that the war in Iraq may have been declared under false pretenses, and you are willing to fully support the effort in lieu of a Congressional investigation on the matter

2. you are fully aware of the current troop levels in Iraq, and you are willing to work with what is provided to you by the civilian leadership

3. you agree that the perpetrators of 9-11 are not in the country to which you are deployed, and some of the insurgents you are fighting are simply there to resist what they consider a US invasion

4. if you are wounded in battle, you fully understand and agree to the level of support the US has allocated for follow-up veteran health care stateside

Quite simply put "NO". When you sign up for ANY branch of the military that IS your Memo of understanding. Most people don't realize (and why I don't know), but when you sign that dotted line, you are pledging allegence to the President of the United States of America and for ALL persons considered a citizen of U.S. You MUST follow those orders. Rarely does 'Moral Obligation' come into play. You would be considered a 'Conscientious Objector'.

You voluntarily give up most of your rights as a citizen so you can UNIFORMILY protect the Constitution with the brethren of ALL U.S. Armed Forces. Rarely does any one person have all the answers for going to war.

I was on U.S. Submarines for 4 years, then reserves for 4 more. A couple of times I personally did not agree w/why we used military actions, but I had agreed to defend my country against ALL perceived enemies (forgeign and domestic). I am happy and proud to have served this country. I believe I served to give people the RIGHT to disagree or agree. It is not the right of any military person to openly disagree w/superiors on going into battle, but HOW to do it. You must be willing to make many sacrafices. And perform well.

The rewards are great. Not to mention you are doing something you believe in. I don't agree w/the war in Iraq at all, but if I were still in Military I would focus on HOW to win or coexist peacefully for the WHOLE of U.S. interests. Not just a few. Personal feelings should be pushed aside. If you want to join, then don't let this one issue side track you. Look at the 'Big Picture' . Remember, the military does not look kindly at 'wimps' or those to afraid to 'step up to the plate'. A lot of countries don't even allow this open forum we are having now.

Also, if the Military is not for you, then there are many other ways to serve your country and retain your own (not someone elses} self respect.

mOST PEOPLE JOIN for reasons other than going to war. It's obvious that when you join the military you'll eventually end up going off to war only someone so naive would believe that. You don't need an MOU to enlist just basic common sense and a thorough knowledge of all five branches of the military, current events and interviewing military personnel other than recruiters.
I joined because it's a tradition in my family and I love my job though I am not pleased about fighting people who were my friends.

First of all, if they ever came up with some crap like that, that would be going against all the values that the military hold dear.

We all know that this war is crap, but we can't do nothing about it, except for follow the order's given to us. We all knew what we we're getting ourselves into before we held up our right hand. We just gotta do the best that we can.

The question you shold ask is DID they read the contract before they signed? I've been in the Military for almost 20 years, and I knew exactly what I was getting into before I signed. It's not to hard to understand... IF you join you may get shot at blown up or recieve other interesting disfigurments from your employment. I have never been promised more than a place to sleep, (Be it a cot or a blanket on the ground) 3 meals a day (C-Rats, and MRE's are counted as food by the way) and a paycheck twice a month. every thing else I either had to pay for or was issued to accomplish the mission at hand, and that included the training and a briefing on what was expected when a mission started. I may not have allway agreed with the "Politics" of an administration but I served not the politics but the people that ellected those officials. Im still in the Military and if they send me to Iraq or Afganistan I will pack my bags kiss my wife and kids goodbye and get on the aircraft to leave. Its what we in the Military do, Its our job, and politics isn't the reason we go.

When I went in, there was nothing like that & I don't think there should be. Should there be a question asked what would happen if the war on terrorism was being fought state side?

Oh yes, there was no Pearl Harbor & 9/11 were modeles in the movie back lots.

No..only a total nitwit would need to believe all this stuff..and the Military wouldn't take you if you are that stupid !!
Go live in one of these countries for a week and see how well you survive !!
Why don't you try to adopt a soldier and see what's REALLY going on..the media is so negative and spews out lie after lie about all of that stuff.
What you said that was true is out troops pay the price when they get home...thanks to Clinton raping our Military & cutting VA benefits to those who served to keep morons like him & you free to spew out so much poision I need to call the Poision Helpline now..
Get a life and stop beleiving everything you see & hear on tv....

You're an idiot!

I think this is a bad idea.... The men and women in our armed forces knew what they were in for when they took their loyalty oath. If they didn't then shame on them. Regardless of how they feel about their Commander in Chief, his politics, or his motives for going to war, it is their sworn duty (which nearly all of them take deadly serious) to carry out the orders of their commanders, and anything that thwarts this sense of duty in any way is extremely dangerous to the chain of command that a good military force depends on in order to function at the highest level of proficiency. Obedience = victory and victory = life. Your memo would toy with that.

I love #3 in your question.

We have proof that Al Queda is in Afganistan,
We have proof that Al Queda is in Iran,
We have proof that Al Queda is in Florida,
We have proof that Al Queda is in New York,
We have proof that Al Queda is in England,
We have proof that Al Queda is in Spain,
We have proof that Al Queda is in France,
I could continue....

But no, al queda couldn't be in Iraq.

sakswildcat
if the war is still going on by the time am 18 i will join the air force and go to war.

shiroikaze2002
That's unnecessary.

You need to do whatever the military tells you to do.

That's what you do as a soldier, follow orders.

I think the next time America goes to war, we make sure we don't have any Vietnam leftovers, and use ARTILLERY. Howitzers are sure-fire(no pun intended) ways to win territorial arguments. BAR-BOOM!--------- WHA-BOOM! Fight's over. War's over. Argument concluded.
Pretty straightforward...

powerplayer25
what the hell do you think you are signing up for??..its not the girlscouts...you take an oath to serve the country..doesnt matter what pretenses are set..you go where you are told..nobody was forced to sign up

Anyone that enlists in the military already understands what they are getting into: the unexpected(in my opinion). You never really know exactly where you're going to go or what you're going to be doing. That's the adventure of it, you don't know. Yeah, I know it's not an adventure when your battle buddy just got killed right beside you, and the enemy is firing relentlessly, but that's a risk every soldier takes when they enlist. I am proud to say that I will be enlisting soon and I am willing to take that risk. Wouldn't want everything done that the soldiers there now and the soldiers before the issue with the Middle East even came about have been done in vain.

Ive got several...
Yes. If I was enlisting, I wouldn't know exactly what I was getting to and I am 29. Imagine someone younger and more naive. I think it would make things more clear. But who would read all the fine print? And double-talk was invented just to get around stuff like this.

When you sign up, you belong to Uncle Sam--->Lock, stock and barrel!! No ifs, ans or buts about it! They own you!

So, who cares what type of agreement that a cilivian thinks that a military man/woman should sign up for...
It doesnt count! You go where your Government send you,and you do what your Government trains you to do...KILL!!
There is no other option. You kill or be killed, (but, as we are told in the MARINES, let the other guy die for his Country, you live and kill some more!).

There is not "agreement" that will stand up, except for the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ), and thats all that you have. Violate that, and you face Court Martial that may result in punishment, or death. No other options allowed.

It appears you never served in the Military, with a panty waiste statement like your "rules" LOL!!

Join up! It will be an experience you will never forget! I promise you that!!
